...and often use it for freewriting during class with a prompt to reflect quietly on assigned readings before talking about them in class. I have very infrequent requests to accommodate students by allowing typing. Most everyone is happy to journal by hand.

Prob not for an online course but I give students small journals and have them do different kinds of writing. Sometimes they're told to write their reading notes; sometimes I give them a homework viewing task (follow social media discourse on x topic)....

I have used perusal but I get the sense that students view it as a surveillance technology and more and more seem to go through the motions of "reading."
