U.S. Population Growth Slows Due to Historic Decline in Net International Migration U.S. population growth slowed to 0.5% between July 1, 2024, and July 1, 2025, according to the newly released Vintage 2025 population estimates.

California, Vermont, New Mexico, Hawaii, and West Virginia all saw population decreases. New Mexico and California saw growth in 2024 only to decline in 2025. Only one state went from negative population growth in 2024 to positive population growth in 2025 - Mississippi.

In contrast, states like Ohio and Michigan have seen a reversal in their domestic migration trends, seeing positive growth after declining at the start of the decade.

In the case of second place Florida, though, the state continues to see a decrease in domestic migration. In 2022, the net domestic change was +310,892. In 2025, that change was only +22,517; a decrease of 92.76%.

In terms of numeric change, Texas added the most people at +391,243. Second place was Florida at +196,680, and third place was North Carolina.

The fastest growing state in 2025 was South Carolina, growing at a rate of 1.5% (+79,958). Idaho and North Carolina were second and third at a rate of 1.4% (+28,861) and 1.3% (+145,907), respectively.

Now let’s move on to the state by state data. 45 states and DC saw population growth in 2025. Of the 10 largest states, only California saw a small population decrease.

The Midwest is the only region this year that saw every state grow in population. It also saw net positive domestic migration for the first time this decade, at a rate of +16,000. Overall, the region grew by 244,385.

In terms of the regional population growth, the south remains the fastest growing at 0.9%. All 4 regions saw population growth, though at slower rates than in 2024.

This change comes from a drop in international migration; though the levels still remain positive. The state’s with the largest change in international migration were Florida (+178,674), Texas (+167,475) and California (+109,278).

For starters, the U.S population went from 340 million to 341.8 million. This is a change of 0.5%, the slowest growth since 2021, and down from the 1% change we saw in 2024.
