I bet I've left stuff out, but I hope this gives a general sense of The responsibilities of mid-career academic.

Admin: departmental meetings, university citizenship, leadership (Director Graduate Studies), student support/personal tutor, internal & external examining, grant application planning/co-ordination, grant application writing/feedback/submission, internal funding apps, travel planning, ethics apps

Research: research multiple publications, write multiple publications, lead/co-investigator on PaR and impact projects, network building, giving conference papers, conference organisation, seminar leading, committee work, editing, peer review, book proposal writing, amending proofs, grant apps

Teaching: unit convening, unit teaching, marking and assessment, lecture writing and delivery, teaching planning, VLE set-up/maintenance, resource lists, teaching meetings, student evaluation and responses, supervision (UG/PG), teaching observations, marking calibration, double-marking, ethics apps

Academic jobs are often seen as some combination of teaching, research and administration. But let's break that down a bit.
A caveat: I am not saying that this is exactly what all academics do - some do more, some do less, some just do different things. But this is what my job involved last year:

Yes, both really seem like jobbing playwrights. And of course the Dekker/Jonson row is fascinating given the high/low, popular/elite type issues at the heart of it.

@starcrossed2018 Apologies - I see I just repeated the same thing as you about collaborations. But yes, I concur! And so often he's seen as the 'weak point' in collaborative plays I think - like, 'oh here's the rubbishy Dekker scene' - which is unfair!

Thanks to you both! I totally agree about the sheer variety making him difficult to pin down. I also think the extent of his collaborations following an initial flurry of solo-authored works might have had a similar effect? It's strange because I think we can recognise something as 'Dekkerian'
