We honour the six Muslim Canadians killed and the 19 injured in the 2017 attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy. Dehumanization leads to violence, and we all have a role to play in addressing Islamophobia and hate and ensuring everyone can live and worship safely.

There is a dark history here in Toronto’s east end. Nazis openly paraded on the boardwalk where signs read: “Jews and dogs not allowed.”

Reflect on that history, how silence enabled that hate, and how one should act to confront hate today.

We remember the Holocaust and the mass murder of millions, including 6 million Jewish people. And we remember the antisemitism and dehumanization that enabled a genocide.

We have responsibility to combat hate and ensure that ‘never again’ has real meaning.

Canada can’t rely on the US, a country that is trampling on its own democracy at home, and abusing other democracies abroad.

The government’s move to reset trade relations with China reflects a practical response to that reality, “the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.”

Finished off this parliamentary session with a productive meeting with the PM. Lots of opportunity for positive collaboration alongside constructive criticism.

The team was out in full force helping Access Alliance Holiday Hamper program at Secord Public School. If you can, think about making a donation to one of the many holiday hamper programs across the community.

We discussed the UK’s Online Safety Act, the need for digital sovereignty and restructuring the ad tech stack, protecting kids online, and how influencers now dominate political information.

What will it take to get us there?

While the UK, EU, and Australia have moved forward with meaningful reforms, Canada keeps introducing bills that die on the order paper.

Ads for illegal drugs remain on Facebook and Instagram. Now, a Liberal MP is demanding answers A Star investigation detailed how online drug sellers reach Canadian customers through paid ads on Meta platforms.
