It's being treated with open skepticism of your disabilities by people you love and trust because your disability aid isn't "standard." Being asked to pretend not to be visibly disabled for their comfort or convenience.

The hardest part of having a service animal isn't so much being denied public access – you learn to handle that with practice.

It's being treated like an inconvenience by those closest to you because inviting you to social gatherings means the service animal comes too. /1

Or, having extra red tape and hoops put up before you can have a referral.

I (Rigan's handler) was told I needed to get an MRI, go through PT, and several other things before I could be referred to an MS specialist for obvious symptoms.

Right now most of his time is spent just being a young horse with his horse buddies. Most of our training is focused on horsey manners. He won't be doing much actual "service horse" training for another 1-2 years when he's matured a bit more mentally (and his attention span is longer)!

Introducing Rigan! He's an 18 month old American Miniature Horse whose current hobbies consist of: naps, throwing everything that isn't nailed down, and being entirely TOO adorable.
