I could go on for hours about how their fighting styles are shockingly similar, yet somehow completely different. Two sides of the same coin, but opposite sides nonetheless.

One of the last entries in Charles Messier's famous catalog, big, beautiful spiral galaxy M101 is definitely not one of the least. About 170,000 light-years across, this galaxy is enormous, almost twice the size of our own Milky Way Galaxy. M101 was also one of the original spiral nebulae observed with Lord Rosse's large 19th century telescope, the Leviathan of Parsontown. In contrast, this multiwavelength view of the large island universe is a composite of images recorded by space-based telescopes in the 21st century. Color coded from X-rays to infrared wavelengths (high to low energies), the image data was taken from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (purple), the Galaxy Evolution Explorer ( blue), Hubble Space Telescope(yellow), and the Spitzer Space Telescope(red). While the X-ray data trace the location of multimillion degree gas around M101's exploded stars and neutron star and black hole binary star systems, the lower energy data follow the stars and dust that define M101's grand spiral arms. Also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101 lies within the boundaries of the northern constellation Ursa Major, about 25 million light-years away. I’m very much against writing off tropes completely. There’s a reason why the majority of riveting stories have similarities. Tropes can be immensely helpful tools for developing a strong story, as long as they’re used as a starting point and not as an end goal!

Authors tend to write for their peers. If they don’t want to challenge themselves to work beyond the limitations of their tropes, they’ll write for people who don’t want to be challenged to read beyond those limitations either. It’s an ouroboros.

Hear me out: an actual sundial watch. No hands or gears, just a sundial on your wrist. Maybe with a compass attached to make it usable.

And yes, this is a direct response to the dire state of the fiction publishing scene. Books being promoted based on their tropes instead of their plot or characters is a symptom of a much larger problem.

Especially with GenAI poisoning the waters, the absence of human creativity is palpable.

Writing tip: Don’t become too attached to tropes. Multifaceted characters will often suit different dynamics, and can even swap roles if observed from different perspectives.

Tropes are a guideline, but overcommitting to them often limits creativity and depth.
