Very glad to be done with this now, I took extensive notes and I felt like I gave this as fair of a chance at possible. I think some people maybe be surprised by just how positive I am in it.

Now I’m gonna actually play some Devil May Cry.

Wrapped up the podcast and it turned out to be like 4 hours and still don’t think we covered everything. There was a lot to say about Netflix Devil May Cry but it was also more fun just shooting the shit with one of my best friends.

That's all I got to say about it, I won't be dedicating any more braincells to it except to laugh at the ending once in a while.

Not that Devil May Cry is high art to begin with, the games have an enjoyable chuuni vibe not unlike most Shonen or Tokusatsu and this could have followed in those footsteps to be mid and inoffensive. Instead, it's just bad.

Unfortunately it goes about this an unrefined and adolescent way with hamfisted dialogue and a teenager’s idea of political commentary. While there are good elements in here, when you hear the writer's voice (which is often) it's overshadowed by its lack of craft and desperation.

The Devil May Cry Netflix show is going out of its way to impress you constantly. It wants you to think that it’s funny, it wants you to think that it has important things to say and it wants you to think that it’s cool.

The breathy white girl version of Devils Never Cry at the end of every episode makes me want to kill myself.

Also I think I'm having more fun with the closed captions than the actual show.

I wasnt after the Ronaldo addition but this just locks in that I made the right choice. The SNK boycott continues.

Its a joy to hear Kevin Conroy, the man is a pro.

The comedy moments were 95% miss but the 5% that hit were good.

I feel the same as when I saw the early clips, if this show was edited down a little there is definitely something here. It feels confident in all the wrong ways.

There was stuff I liked. Some moments of the fight scenes were definitely very Dante but undercut badly at times with the entirely out of character writing.

Johnny Yong Bosch's delivery is fantastic and really elevates the poor material (get him for Dante in the future).

Also (and I can’t believe I’m about to say this) they mischaracterised Agni and Rudra?

Again, it’s not like its high art but them having the vibe of old warrior friends instead of weird goons is just more interesting.

The worst parts of this show is the stuff adapted from DMC.

Halfway through the Devil May Cry Netflix show and this isn’t good.

Lady in the OG is an interesting character whose dedication allows her to hang with supernatural forces but now she is just a cop with tech.

Genuinely great feature that allows you to decouple quote tweets from your post.

You mean I get to send miserable and snarky Twitter attitude people to the shadow realm? Hell yeah.

Man something just clicked with DMC5 Vergil last night and I was just firing off perfect Judgement Cuts. Totally going to lose the rhythm by the time I go back to play today though.

So true internet user, the reason why the modern iteration of a franchise has less features or customisation isn't because dev pipelines are streamlined, game budgets have not raised in line with dev costs or a myriad of other reasons.

It's because the developers are lazy!

Nor does Devil May Cry 1, 2, 4 or 5. Thank you.

Happy Devil May Cry 3 20th anniversary! It doesn't need to be remade.

The Lost Soul Aside trailer looked basic as hell and had next to no gameplay, wasn't impressed after it being absent for 10 years.

Tides of Annihilation totally stole its spot imo, that game looks cool and seems proud to be an action game.

Two of my most hated "critiques":

"The curtains are just blue!" which is just another way of saying you refuse to engage with shit beyond the surface level and want to feel smug about it.

"I could make that". Yeah you could, but you have nothing to say with it so no one cares.

You can like it or not like it but if you engage properly with it you will find it will make you a better critic of the things you do like.

Criticism doesn't mean just tearing things down from a place of perceived superiority.
