I think there is a real discussion to be had about the validity of intentional sandbox!

But there is no point in leading it at this point in time because:

1. It is actively choking out the design and skill testing games
2. It's completely dominant on every level of gaming culture

When I specify "skill based games", I am trying to make space for games like Garry's mod and Disco elysium to be also valid design.

But they don't want nuance, they Want victory, and use "neutrality" as a bat

Give an inch they take a mile

I am excited to hear Sektori is good, and that it handles it's Rogue and RNG elements very well. And plan to dive into it one day

But I can't help but wish this sort of "roguelite (but secretly very arcadey)" was not the only channel Arcade games are allowed to exist in

Does anyone else get into that phase on the 1cc grind where the "waiting room" almost becomes comfy?

Like you go from
"Ughh low challenge downtime"

To

"If it isn't my dear stage 2, any changes since 14 minutes ago buddy?"

Hmm the dev has the discord linked inside the game, they seem pretty active on it, maybe you could note it there. Interesting oversight considering the Star Fox inspiration.

And yes, I quite like the game, I have some serious criticisms, however it really stands out from the sea anyway

No matter how you play...

"This game sux" is a force of progress and evolution, it is a constructive conversation with the artists, that leads to long-term wealth of fun

"Yo this game lit" is a force of stagnation, low quality short term gratification, that decays potential

30.11.2025 13:12 β€” πŸ‘ 11    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I have heard the game gets harder levels into a run, but without that base layer of depth it's hard for me to feel invested in anything that gets layered on top of it

After testing, I was finally able to figure out why "Evil Egg" sadly doesn't do it for me

The cursor is completely independent of the character movement, making aiming feel like a separate point & click layer, with no resistance or friction

Also convention is nice and all, but at the end of the day its you and the game, and how the game manipulates your emotions to curate an experience. Convention works very effectively in social games, because there the "rules" are other people holding you accountable, but these are PVE games

29.11.2025 14:37 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I think the only space where there is a grey zone is genuine accessibility options. And there I would say "what can you chip away while still maintaining the core challenge" which will inherently still remain inaccessible to a lot of people

29.11.2025 14:34 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Games focused around challenge, should ideally make you feel like you would go with the easier, that you would go with the "win" button, but cannot, so you have to persevere, and that is the exact impulse that leads you to finding strategies. It doesnt work if there actually is a "win" button

29.11.2025 14:32 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Usually these options affect a games challenge one way or another, and challenge is more matter of time rather than skill. I feel like validating the belief that challenge is something some can and some cant is validating an incorrect assumption and misses the point of challenging games

The reality is that Arcade players are nowhere near mean enough to consoleshit

29.11.2025 10:27 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The key thing to notice about these reviews, and reviews of Arcade games in general, is how its a critique of the Structure itself, not the gameplay, not really

The crime itself is it being an Arcade game, regardless of the games actual quality

29.11.2025 10:27 β€” πŸ‘ 25    πŸ” 7    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

Like the assumption here is that the experience is cheapened by you using the option, in reality atleast in my case, the option being there is the deflating factor

29.11.2025 10:24 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Or Alternatively, the "options" framework of game design has an actual negative effect on your experience, emotional fulfillment you get from the game, and overall design in other places?

Reading some Death in Abyss reviews, its a shame that every developer making gameplay focused arcade games has to deal with these mouth breathers

The problem with talking about game design on the internet, is not only are you constantly interacting with people solely playing mediocre games, they also do NOT play games

It's like trying to explain math to a dog, it doesn't work

you just look stupid for talking to a dog

Death in Abyss releasing in 22 hours

Unfortunately, I am busy with work and the Resident Evil video, so I am unable to play PEAK quite on release

Everyone is crafting a narrative, it comes with human communication and contradictions.

The framework being taught is the specific one we want to push, and that comes with teaching to discard the other ones and their advocates

27.11.2025 12:23 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Also I would not say that riling up against game journalists as an entity as bad. Since they are nothing more than the marketing wing of game capital, and are not expected to be on the side of a Niche design framework, ever. Narrative for them but not for us doesn't work

27.11.2025 11:39 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Wait a minute, if you go look through Spikeout Battle street reception, it is slammed by IGN, Gamespot, GameInformer, Edge, and the Xbox magazine. I'm 2005 these are a good representation of journalist and absolutely shape the narrative around the games release

27.11.2025 11:36 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

He doesn't seem very vague to me. He always gives specific examples of articles and videos by big publications. How much more specific can you get than literally providing examples? Just like how I posted this screenshot of this PC gamer article, not from 2004, but last 2 months

27.11.2025 10:43 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And in case it wasn't clear, these narratives affect the financial feasibility of certain types of design. Which in turn affects the output of that type of design

Gaming journalist is hardly a imagined boogey man considering the headlines and writing they churn out. Do I need to remind you of

These things reinforce narratives
