I'm curious to know: how many pages do you usually read before you decide if a story is interesting enough to keep going?

It's a fascinating thing when a character of yours has some kind of epiphany, and then suddenly, it hits you on a personal level. For example, my character just realized that the word "unique" can sometimes be a synonym for "lonely."

A quick gut-check for myself: ditch the beautiful scenes that don't mean anything.

There's a fundamental difference between how real life works and how a narrative works. Reality is full of meaningless, random events, but a good story is intentional. Every single moment has to be purposeful, or it's just dead weight.

When you're trying to create something and also dealing with anxiety, it's really tough to tell the difference between helpful feedback and just your anxiety freaking out about whether a scene is any good. Mostly writing this for myself, but maybe it'll resonate with someone else too.

Seriously, is it just me, or is it super weird how stuff you've only ever read or privately jotted down suddenly starts happening for real all around us? Mind. Blown.

When you're writing stories, it's super important to distance yourself from your own hang-ups and avoid any associations with the characters being you. Otherwise, it won't be a story or a creative work, but just an attempt to spill your guts to everyone. And that really hurts the stories themselves.

I’m feeling an increasing sense of total surrealism about everything that’s happening. I’m not particularly into politics, but even I was struck by this scandal Trump created around Zelensky. I just can’t believe that a U.S. president could stage such an outrageous spectacle.

I am looking for a situation in which serious rivals or people belonging to different classes with deep contradictions find themselves together. Preferably fantasy, ideally urban fantasy, but not necessary. It doesn’t have to be a romance novel; a fantasy with a love story is also suitable.Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a love story with a real love-hate trend? Everything I come across seems somehow frivolous. Something like: the characters had a slight quarrel or once he pulled her pigtails.

I have struggled with this in my Nexus series. It can be fun but also mind bending. I mix mythic and magical beings alongside with normal small town characters. In Book 4 the entire town becomes aware of the Fae taking sanctuary at the Nexus Ranch.

I’ve seen concepts like these before, but usually in the context of humor, satire, or parody. But realistically, all of this could cause serious problems!

The challenges of an interracial marriage between a mermaid and an orc. The struggles of meteorologists in a world where weather witches hold real power. Determining the legal jurisdiction of a ghost.

Would vampires sue a human for refusing to be a donor despite having a contract? Discrimination against goblins by elves. The arrest of a man who removed a sunshade meant to protect trolls, causing them to turn to stone.

How would the presence of witches affect the insurance system? How would you prove to the insurance company that a witch really influenced you? How would beauty salons work for werewolves? Dating sites for dragons?

There is also an image of an open magical world in modern times. It seems that it also cannot be called something unique. But I really miss a story in which the interaction between such a world and the world of people would unfold widely.

The image of the elf as a hero-lover is also considered incredibly tired. I became interested in finding at least something that would be well written. Result? 0.

There is Tanya Huff: very stereotyped and slightly caricatured images, the rules of the world are introduced so that people don’t care about them later (this is about the impossibility of vampires being together).

But what is written in this genre? Preferably from the series. It seems like a lot, but... The series Laurel Galminton slipped into porn. I won’t even write anything about Twilight, it’s not funny. It's just really bad for me as a reader.
