Lawmakers’ concerns about China manipulating content purportedly motivated (in part) the law requiring TikTok’s sale to US owners. But Trump-allied investors, a US gov’t–appointed board seat, and US gov’t oversight of the algorithm rebuild raise concerns about far-right influence over the new app.

TikTok sale puts app’s algorithm in the spotlight – a social media expert explains how the For You Page works and what changes are in store With a change of ownership in the works, the fate of TikTok’s algorithm – the secret sauce of its success – is up in the air. Whatever happens, changes to the video sharing app are coming.

The preliminary TikTok deal announced by Trump in the last few days would create a new US-only version of the app and license the algorithm from ByteDance. I shared thoughts about what could happen in an article published in the @theconversation.com

Local platformized utopias? corporate discourse, community groups, and volunteer moderation on Facebook, Reddit, and NextDoor

New OA pub day! Given the dwindling of local newspapers, folks are turning to social media. Platforms are discursively constructing local community groups as a new kind of hub. But local volunteer mods are the ones who are charged to realize these visions. journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10....

University leaders need to understand: they are holding INCREDIBLY good cards.

It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have thatβ€”AND winning legal arguments.

More than a restriction on what can be said, this represents an effort to constrain what is known. A clear attempt to cultivate ignorance.
