At some point, during grad school, @paleopatt.bsky.social, me, and other people joked on using Shaq as an unit system (distance, isotopic composition, etc). Glad to see the #Creepcast podcast having the same idea.

Screenshot showing a variability of different climate-related graphics for different United States climate change indicators

I'd like to introduce a new page on my website: U.S. climate indicator visuals (zacklabe.com/united-state...).

I only have a few basic variables so far, but I will be expanding this summer to add a range of metrics (e.g., ecological). I welcome suggestions! Hope this is useful, especially nowadays.

Trump officials take steps toward a radically different NSF Efforts to shrink staff, budget, and focus have alarmed members of Congress

NSF grant terminations are disproportionately affecting underrepresented scientists. 58% of canceled grants have women PIs, despite making up only 34% of awards. 17% of canceled grants have Black PIs (versus 4% of the pool). Hispanic and disabled PIs are twice as likely to have NSF grants canceled.

Scientists reel as turmoil roils National Science Foundation The National Science Foundation, a major government funder of basic science research, is being shaken up, with over 1,000 grants already terminated and the White House looking to halve its budget.

I talked to NPR earlier this week - along with several other scientists - about how devastating the impacts of these NSF grant terminations have been (and it has only just begun...). #SaveNSF #StandUpForScience #NSF

Almost five years of cave climate monitoring in Australia and New Zealand It was back in 2020 and COVID lockdowns that ACKMA, the Australasian Cave and Karst Management Association, decided to lead a volunteer, citizen science project to measure the 'baseline cave climate'. That is, to collect data for the first time for tourist caves which were temporarily closed at the start of the pandemic. Move forward almost five years, and cave climate data is still being collected from some of the original participating caves.
