In-person education is not always possible.
Making schools safer, while supporting and recognising the dilmas that Clinically Vulnerable people face, is the only way to ensure that children like Lana and "David" are not let down again.

Clinically Vulnerable people must become a distinct group recognised in:
Decision-making
Data collection
Public reporting
Funded research
Clinical vulnerability must also become a protected characteristic in the Equality Act.

πͺ When the UK Covid Inquiry began to focus on Children and Young people last ween CVF's barrister @adamwagner1.bsky.social KC stood to address the chair, Baroness Hallett, and shared our powerful opening submissions.
He started by sharing "David's" story (13).
1/
By the second lockdown we understood the harms.
We should never close schools - they need to be protected. BUT if we need to shut school ever we do need to find creative ways to include the full school experience including a national entitlement for remote teaching.
9/
He wanted universities and departments to research the link between COβ and learning outcomes, because if he could connect health, learning, and concentration, it would show that students in poorly ventilated schools are disadvantaged before they even step into an exam hall.

π¨Sir Hamid Patel CBE, CEO of Star Academies
Many children lived in multi-generational households.
20% of the children were bereaved.
Persistent absenteeism - increase in young carers looking after Clinically Vulnerable adults.

Community Pharmacy England Q Pharmacy teams have reported major issues to us over the last two days related to large numbers of patients booking COVID-19 vaccinations via the National Booking System (NBS) who are not eligible for the vaccine this winter. We are working with NHS England to try to address this unacceptable situation and to get more NHS communications issued to help people understand whether they are eligible for the vaccine. In the meantime, we have created three posters that pharmacy teams can use to help explain about vaccine eligibility this winter:
The MILLIONS of people who were denied vaccines are suddenly realising.
@rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social this was a terrible idea.
Not only will the NHS struggle this autumn / winter, but people will suffer and die unnecessarily.
It isn't too late for a U-turn!
This. People eligible for the flu vaccine are not eligible for the updated COVID booster. That makes zero sense

New schools - mechanical ventilation had a 'clean air' setting (took care of itself)
Old schools - natural ventilation was a challenge, the only way to address that is to open windows

NEW CVF BLOG - Screenshot of top of page A Preventable Winter Crisis: Why Clinically Vulnerable People Need Your Help
β οΈThe NHS once protected us.
Now, millions of Clinically Vulnerable people are being told we donβt qualify for a Covid vaccine - even as new variants spread.
This is a dangerous, preventable mistake.

"Clinical Vulnerability" needs to mentioned in terms of flexibility.
It would be helpful to name that much more clearly.
It should be explicitly mentioned in connection with a proactively supportive approach on the part of schools for the child or the family.

Only England took a strict punitive approach.
The other 3 UK countries, had an attitude that they had to take each case as it happens.
They talked about the need for:
Understanding
Support
Flexibility

Shared her thoughts on barriers faced by children in Clinically Vulnerable families.

Again I can look into the definitions of this, but you use diabetes an example there, that I wouldn't consider as a life-limiting condition - it is a manageable condition.
8/
Q "80% had a life-limiting condition. "
"Can I ask does the category life-limiting condition include children with serious but managable conditions which may affect their life expectancy [.] or is it limited to conditions where death is expected regardless of management?
7/
Duncan Barton, Chief Nursing Officer
RSV is used to explain that because children weren't mixing that we saw a resurgence and was a concern.
This borders on two issues, so-called "herd immunity" and the debunked "immunity debt". This topic needs to be carefully monitored.
1/
"For the child who had that additional risk.
Do you accept that for some parents ... it would have still been reasonable for them, making that individual risk analysis, to decide that ... was not the correct option for their children....?"
8/
"Do you also accept that schools were[.] still risky environments?
- crowded classrooms
- poor ventilation
- prolonged indoor contact
- lack of masking"
9/
CVF Qs @adamwagner1.bsky.social
"The guidance said that the majority of children with asthma, diabetes, epilepsy & kidney disease do not need to continue to shield and could [.]return to schools as they reopened.
Did you appreciate that [those] children [.] had not been told to shield?"

New buildings with passive ventilation. No windows that open. Varying degrees of effectiveness.
"We could probably ... track correlations between outcomes and attendances based on the quality of school buildings and the environments."

Ventilation in older buildings, challenges heating / keeping warm.
"Not a great learning environment."

Clinically Vulnerable children and those in Clinically Vulnerable families: Some families kept children off school due to risks.
CTI : "Have you been aware of that as a particular concern affecting attendance?"
"No."

Claire is an excellent advocate for SEN and doesn't recognise the overlap. Unfortunately she did not answer the question.
"I would make a ... case for children with SEN because... at a higher risk of developing a MH problem and... often excluded from mainstream MH services."
4/
Many schools took a trauma informed approach to mental health.
βFor all [who experience bereavements and life traumas], if you look at the numbers of life-traumas children experience, children with SEN often ...experienced a larger number of adverse childhood experiences...β
