I’m about to climb into my attic to replace the air filter on my HVAC system. Please offer thoughts and prayers, because the pull down is rickety AF, has a bunch of nails sticking through it, and can’t be easily replaced. Oh, and I’ve already fallen through it once before.

The thing the naysayers neglect to mention is that no other defendant would have been charged with any of this if they were similarly situated with the same fact pattern. The pardon is just. Because the basis was not.

The chief concern in the Federalist Papers was for “factionalism.” We have fallen into that trap in the most inauspiciously way possible. If we have any hope of moving forward, we have to move beyond hating/fighting people for differing opinions.

This seems reductive. Three things strike me as true:
1. no other defendant would have these matters disposed criminally with the same fact pattern
2. the incoming appointees will try to find smoke where there's no fire
3. it feels icky because the norms were blown up in re: #1
This feels just.

Only after all that did Weiss seek Special Counsel status and pursue the cases in court. The bottom line is: no other similarly situated defendant would have their matters disposed criminally. This pardon is just. It feels icky because the norms were blown up WAAAYYYY before it got to this point.

And let's not forget the Trump-appointed US Atty who ran this prosecution originally concluded a diversion agreement was appropriate, which was scuttled by a Trump-appointed judge (yes, it had unusual terms), all while the R-s in Congress were screaming about favoritism.

The veracity of the argument matters-- or, at least, it should. Trump was convicted in the same manner for the same crimes as countless defendants in NYC. Hunter was charged with and convicted of/pleaded to crimes generally reserved for enhancements and recidivists.
