In that parable, God literally says "You fool!" to a rich man. The Greek word for "fool" translates literally "You mindless, stupid, egotistical ignoramus!"

The lectionary readings for this Sunday were Ecclesiastes ("Vanity, vanity, all is vanity) and Luke (Parable of the Rich Fool). And I had a few readers complain that my reflection was too "angry" and "judgmental."

Should I have them address their concerns to Solomon and Jesus?

Yesterday, I wrote an essay on the Serenity prayer. Today, I wrote on Jesus’ clearest condemnation of wealth in the NT.

Both essays are true; both share wisdom from Christian theology. The 2 weave a complex narrative of faith.

Guess which one (some of) my readers take exception to & argue with?

History should teach us empathy and realism, not superiority and mythology.

I think there’s a big difference between “all hope is lost” and “I have lost hope” and in climate it is really important to distinguish between the two. My personal feelings, your personal feelings are not the limits of our collective politics.
