I write a newsletter that reaches nearly 100,000 people. There's a wide variety of folks there. And this person isn't a Christian nationalist - their concern arose from a completely different perspective.

Please read my essayโif youโre able. Thank you and โค๏ธ to all the survivors whoโve messaged that they are sharing my piece without reading or finishing. I understand. Much love to and peace to you. Itโs a hard weekend in ways others canโt fully understand.๐น

I'm on God's side of this particular argument.
03.08.2025 22:44 โ ๐ 26 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Also, I was too hard on rich people.
03.08.2025 22:43 โ ๐ 20 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0In that parable, God literally says "You fool!" to a rich man. The Greek word for "fool" translates literally "You mindless, stupid, egotistical ignoramus!"
And I'm the angry one?
The lectionary readings for this Sunday were Ecclesiastes ("Vanity, vanity, all is vanity) and Luke (Parable of the Rich Fool). And I had a few readers complain that my reflection was too "angry" and "judgmental."
Should I have them address their concerns to Solomon and Jesus?
The commenter you responded to was being sarcastic. I'm pretty sure they see the matter as you do....

03.08.2025 17:35 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Iโve found it hard personally too - and yet that doesnโt keep me from seeing the truth or writing of that truth.
Jesus meant it to be hard. A narrow way, most certainly.
Geez. The โwhy are you so angry and politicalโ comments keep coming!
Maybe Christians should actually read what Jesus said? Maybe?

Yesterday, I wrote an essay on the Serenity prayer. Today, I wrote on Jesusโ clearest condemnation of wealth in the NT.
Both essays are true; both share wisdom from Christian theology. The 2 weave a complex narrative of faith.
Guess which one (some of) my readers take exception to & argue with?
History should teach us empathy and realism, not superiority and mythology.
03.08.2025 14:43 โ ๐ 91 ๐ 16 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1I think thereโs a big difference between โall hope is lostโ and โI have lost hopeโ and in climate it is really important to distinguish between the two. My personal feelings, your personal feelings are not the limits of our collective politics.
03.08.2025 12:58 โ ๐ 771 ๐ 155 ๐ฌ 16 ๐ 15Todayโs lectionary readings take on the billionaires . Because greed and foolishness are of a piece.
Rarely do biblical texts preach themselves quite so clearly.

โI will continue praying for an alternative ending: one where the sexual protection racket finally falls apart, and nobody gives a damn whether a rapist is red or blue.
Whenever DJT does something terrible, I donate to the cause he attacked.
I'm going broke.
It was yet another Trumpy Friday.
If you feel bad, it means you havenโt yet been broken. It means you still have a soul. Your moral core has not been breached.
Six months of Trumpism and you have a heart. It is, however, likely suffering moral injury.
