For your questions on riddles of #HieronymusBosch #latemedieval #earlyrenaissance #art #symbolism . Images can be enhanced for visibility. (Generally no content warning for 500+ years old works of art.)
CORR. “Fitting” should read as “dotting”.

More considerations of what the Jug or can could be: Regular Arma Christi have several jugs or containers: *Ointment pots of Mary Magdalene *Water carafe or bowl of Pontius Pilatus *cup of wine with bile etc. *the man getting out may symbolize resurrection, *or just a proverb about that one can learn (Wordplay in Dutch with leer = both learn AND ladder.)
Passion Items on Bosch “Hell”
15.JUG?
Considering size & unknown function, it has no use in Afterlife. IMO it must be related Arma Christi!
It has
*multi-handles (vaguely a friendship jug)
*prunt fitting, to hold it better.
Bosch drew a similar jug, at LEFT.
The item isn’t understood well
>see ALT
“I think that I can get there
just as easy with a ladder!”
The blindfold is shown rather rarely on Arma Christi panels. At TOO LEFT by Hieronymus Bosch, in a hidden form. CA.1500AD at the Prado. Luke 22. The Soldiers Mock Jesus 63 The men who were holding Jesus began to mock Him and beat Him. 64 They blindfolded Him and kept demanding, “Prophesy! Who hit You?” 65 And they said many other blasphemous things against Him.… The rest of the collage is by other artists, either as a blindfold sec, or as Christ blindfolded.
Jesus’ Arma Symbols hidden on Bosch “Hell”
14.JESUS’ BLINDFOLD
is quite seldom but was shown a few times in art.
It is mentioned in Luke 22:64 as part of the mocking of Christ >ALT.
Bosch hid it in the bar brawling crowd (TOP LEFT) where it is primarily shown as to what a bloody row could lead to.
It seems that painter Bosch is censuring nobility with this scene.
Falconry is the typical sport of the upper class. Here, as penalty/cleansing in Purgatory, the falconer himself is capped with a big falcon hood!
Unclear is what he is holding on his left side, and why:
is it a big fish?
“Don’t tempt me with a big fish!”

THREE DEMONS & THE BOOK
However fitting Dr. Bax’s opinion on this scene was (demons stole the book from Anthony; 1948),
Dr. Eric de Bruyn’s (2023) explanation is even better:
Vita Antonii mentions Anthony seeing demons disguised
(as monks), pretending to sing psalms or quote the Bible.
The historic event happened in Amsterdam, when in hurried time of an Uprising, one mayor grabbed a cooking pot to protect himself. He became a ridicule. The proverb from Harrebomée vol.2 page 184 seems quite fitting, since painter Bosch ridicules the demon in about ten ways!
A KETTLE
on the devil’s head can have more meanings:
*he’s Gluttonous
*a funny crown
*linking to a historic event.
I found a proverb that also seems valid
“These are not the pots that stand on their own pegs.”
[The NL ‘pikkel’ can be a pot’s leg. The motto indicates the boastfulness of the person.]
“Well, I can’t figure the writing out.
It’s pure gobbledegook!”
“Do you hate it too,
to breathe with your mouth open?”
“That’s not MY mouth
that is open!”
“I have NOTHING to do with this
old lady and her young worker-
Nor with this Tavern at all!”
At first level: a working girl.
At deeper level: she links to Maria Magdalena, or Mother Mary, at the body of Christ.

Notice that even on grisaille paintings, the torch is colored! NB, the Torch itself and the Lantern are not mentioned in the biblical verses.
Passion torches by other artists. All Arma Christi works or similar.
Bosch’s “Hell” wing has many hidden Passion Items:
13. THE TORCH
was like the Lantern (post #1), carried in the night mob that came to arrest Jesus at the Mount of Olives.
Bosch again hides the article here. He placed it in the hands of a demon which accompanies a soul on Tree-Man’s head cover.
“I’d wish they’d stop
staring at us…”
The hidden scene on Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden triptych; and two other depictions also by Bosch of the standard scene of St.Peter cutting off Malthus’ ear during Christ’s arrest. Ca.1500AD.
The scene with Malthus’ ear cut off by other artists or folk arrangements of the same in Arma Christi.
Jesus’ Passion Item hidden on Bosch “Hell”.
12.PETER CUTS OFF MALTHUS’ EAR
is a regular Arma Christi of the scene at Jesus’ arrest; from Bible verse Luke 22:50.
Often seen on Passion Tools images.
Painter Bosch hid it cleverly in a unique giant war machine on the Garden triptych ‘Afterlife’ panel.
“Yahoooooo!”

PENTIMENTI
are showing lines of the original design. Here it’s mainly an extremely long left arm (branch!) of the Witch figure; the arm was discarded.
Also the baby (J) originally had a little hoodie.

ARMA CHRISTI
The motif of A.C. can be understood as presenting the reader (i.e. viewer -C.) with prompts for penance and devotion and spiritual transformation as they ‘engage sensually and morally with the pilgrimage to the holiest sites of the Passion [and] effectively experience the crucifixion-‘
“Just one more minute and
you'll be ready to go again!”
“I think that they exaggerated
a bit about the view…”
“O.k. -
I really regret following the Toad 🐸 “
The Infra-Red imagery gives some more information of the original design.
The upper layer of the final painting has some damaged spots.
Collage 1: Left image: from the Garden triptych. On older photos, a hand and arm seem depicted on the long bib of the demon. The smaller drawing at Right is by Bosch.
Collage 2. Veil of Veronica. The 3 top images are by Bosch, or the Bosch Studio. The others are by several artists.
Passion items are hidden on Bosch “Hell”.
11. A BURIAL SHROUD
is rare as Arma Christi, but often on depictions with His sarcophagus. It became (in)famous as relic with an imprint of Jesus’ body: was it fake?
The Veil of Veronica relic w. Jesus’ face is painted more often also by Bosch, 2nd collage
Bosch thinking: “oh no, the triple and dual hooks are used by demons only. These are regular people..”

A KILLER/FIGHTING HARE
was depicted in marginalia, specif. drolleries, funny side illustrations of manuscripts.
A Dutch expression describes the Upside Down World:
“The hunters catch the hares,
and the hares catch the hunters.”
Undated, Harrebomée v1
Bosch used a very similar image, see far right.
