I can recommend Octopath Traveller if you havent played it already if you like JRPGs with more straightforward stories. I havent played zero yet but one and two are both fantastic! The combat is somewhat similar to persona's too (tho they are both unique in their own ways)

Anyways, as far as JRPGs go, the persona series has some bangers.

Apologies for the super long response but I hope it helps you! These are pretty long games (80-120 hours long) so it helps to be decently informed going in. Also, I can provide a personal ranking for 3-5 in any category if you wish!

You've said you don't like the flashiness of persona 5 but that game's narrative deals with justice, social outcasts, the will of the people, and politics.

I have played a bit of persona 1 and it is not very similar to the P3-5 at all. I have not played P2 but it is similarly different.

As for what the games are actually about:

The persona series has a recurring theme of society's influence on individuals.

Persona 3 deals with depression, death, and what makes life worth living.

Persona 4 deals with lies, beliefs, rumors, bullies, and how to stay true to yourself.

As for persona 4, its enhanced ps2 era version (persona 4 golden) is available on steam and there is a remake coming out for it on the horizon called persona 4 revival. It's good but I don't like the story as much as the other games and the boss fights are kinda lacking in comparison imo.

If you don't have something that can run persona 3 reload I would recommend getting persona 3 portable which is on steam or can be emulated. I mainly recommend it because you can choose what all of your party members do each turn which you cant do in base p3 for some reason. Reload has this too tho.

I would personally recommend 3 over 4! I just found the story of 3 to be more compelling overall but 4 does have a stronger hook admittedly.

Persona 3 also has a remake for modern systems that modernizes a lot of the dated design choices as well as refreshes the weakest part of the game.

That's really just a persona 5 thing tbf. Try persona 3 or 4 if you're interested in the gameplay but don't like the artstyle.

There's plenty steak to dig into mechanically but artistically, it definitely leans much harder in favor of UI and other 2D visuals over the 3D ones.

If the phantoms were as old as the creeper, I wonder if perception would be different towards them?

I think it could be a case study on nostalgia lol. Phantoms are way less intrusive and demand much less of the player yet are constantly singled out for being annoying. The creeper just spawns like any other mob and literally destroys your progress and has the potential to 1-shot you.

I've heard the game saves up to 10 shinies in memory so maybe you missed these at some point passing through their area 🤔

I, myself, have also gotten 2 shinies with about half the playtime (patrat and fletchling ✨✨)
