The ruby was replaced by the emerald. I changed it because the ruby ore was too similar to redstone.

No, the surface stronghold was just a happy accident, but back then I didn't have any reliable tools to detect the surface of the world. So the strongholds ended up far beneath the ground, to avoid being in oceans and similar. (Surface-detection was added for the end cities, much later.)

Yes, for me as well. It got easier when I realized the squash can squish multiple zombies at once, but it was still a bit random to get to 15

Lots of ideas! It's similar to the brainstorming sessions the team has. Then it's a long process of figuring out which ones of these that can be made, what "impact" they will have, and if there is a common theme. So there are seldom "bad" or "good" ideas, it's more of a range.

I'm not sure. However, it's true that we gave translator capes to the top contributors. The problem was that flooded the translation site with "I want a cape, too!" people, which made the translations worse. Not saying that was the case for this person, but it's why we stopped giving out the capes.

When beds were added there were plenty of more "advanced" items that had a stack limit of 1. Over time most of them have changed, but the beds are still at 1.

The original idea of the shulker was that it was going to camouflage as the block it was sitting on. The code base didn't support that back then, so I changed the design to its current form. Not sure where the inspiration came from, except I wanted something very vertical.

... I could also have added sponges to more locations, or maybe even have sponges instead of gold in the "gold room". I probably simply didn't think of it back in the day. I think I just thought it was cooler with gold.

Well it's a good question. It's a balance between fixed features and procedural ones. The sponge room is hard to place because it only has an opening downwards. I could've made it a fixed feature, but that would have implications on the procedural parts. ...
