Public lands MUST remain in public hands. We know this is inconvenient (and they know that too!) but the more we do now the more we’re protecting our public lands for future generations.

Industrial logging turns public forests into single-use landscapes for decades, undermining multiple use, tourism, fisheries, and rural subsistence.”

The bill removes Best Interest Findings, competitive bidding, and key protections in the Forest Resources and Practices Act, weakening safeguards for salmon, water quality, and subsistence.

The Cascade Point Ferry terminal remains an obsession for the Alaska Department of Transportation, regardless of the outpouring of folks in Southeast Alaska who oppose the project. According to a new article by the Alaska Beacon, legislators are joining in on the skepticism.

The scariest part of all? “Outside of mining, most other effects — including tourism, commuting, and general freight handling — are best described as redistributive rather than generative,” the report concludes.

“...That gain would be partially offset by a 7% increase in travel costs — mostly driving related — that would reduce overall ridership 1% to 2%, according to the analysis,” as reported by the Juneau Independent (Link in bio).

Ready to be scared CENTSLESS? This project is a bad deal for Southeast Alaskans. While the report claims an expected 18% reduction in travel time and a resulting 4-8% increase in ridership, a look at the expected costs to travelers paints a grimmer picture:

It’s with great sadness that SEACC is sharing the passing of our beloved board member and friend, Geeneenéikh, Raymond “Ray” Sensmeier. Ray has served on the SEACC board representing his community of Yakutat since 2009.

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day and we wanted to acknowledge the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples’ who have protected this land since time immemorial and continue to do so.
