I agree. The way in which that trio also seamlessly incorporated free improvisation into its performances gave modern players a release from the scene beef around what jazz is and who gets to play it, however much Wynton et al tried to revive it.

Not to mention, the Standards Trio was also a hugely important cultural bridge between two eras of jazz, the American Songbook standards era and the subsequent fusion/ECM era.

I remember playing a jazz gig in a bar in Vauxhall years ago. The venue charged a flat per-person fee of £5 to every table for the live music, and it worked perfectly fine. Bob Geldof walked in, orders a drink and right in front us playing, proceeds to argue with the bar staff about the £5. Classy.

I feel this argument would be more convincing if the renovation costs weren't between 10 and 20 times what it cost to rebuild the Notre Dame. That's an astronomical sum for a piece of Victorian hubris. If this is about national heritage, spend the money on several dozen other renovations instead.
