Won't post much as I have no insight or expertise, but sometimes forget that when drunk with the power of a keyboard. Pronouns whatever. Writer, editor etc. of ESL materials in Prague. Interests here: Politics, climate, SFF, linguistics, i dunno

I'm sure it did. Though whether it was more than just by enhancing Kool-Aid's name recognition & iconic status is more than I can tell. A Google books search won't cut it for that question ;)

Just double-checked with other forms (drunk, drank, drinking); same result. Might be worth noting that some sources I'm seeing suggest that Kool-Aid was associated with Black and Puerto-Rican culture in the 1960s and 70s, so there may be a racist subtext. Flavor-Aid meanwhile has almost no presence.

I don't think that's true. A Google books search (the only corpus I have to hand) only throws up 2 instances of the phrase "drink the kool-aid" from before Jonestown, neither of them fitting that sense. But I'm sure that Kool-Aid's cultural cut-through was a factor.

When I first moved to Prague I redecorated a flat. Wanted to paint the wall & was told in no uncertain terms that it is only possible to paint a wall if it's first hung with woodchip. Otherwise the paint won't hold to the surface. When I said my experience in England was otherwise, I was laughed at.

If they've had 2 debates then "it's not a game of best of three" doesn't say what Spencer presumably wanted. I'd have gone with "third time pays for all". Good for her refusing the "debate me bro" move though

OP isn't upset at the number but at having the number and not being able to tell anyone. (It's ambiguously written but if they were really upset at the number, they could just get a new card. There's nothing to stop them telling the bank.)

Now *that* is the entrance to a rabbit hole! There's a (fictitious??) neo-Nazi Masonic group called the Order of the Vril mentioned in Foucault's Pendulum, inspired apparently by Madame Blavatsky taking Bulwer-Lytton to have been an initiate into real esoteric mysteries. Talk about soup to nuts.

I worked on marketing research for Laughing Cow long ago and this, unbelievably, never came up. I thought Ursula was just shitposting but oh my god. This thread. And its sequel (yes, there's a sequel; there's always a sequel). It's life-changing stuff. 🀣🀣

Just another example of well-meant but ill-thought-out ecological management. You get the discarded vape population down artificially, obviously something else is going to fill the niche. There's no natural predator.

Not to mention that this administration and its policies won't last forever. The vaccine development cycle is probably longer than a single administration, even with the acceleration available thanks to mRNA. It's not wholly convincing.

As with the plant milks brouhaha, this is about legislation that exists to protect consumers from labelling abuses by the food industry (like Simpson's-style Malk) being coopted to protect the food industry from consumer choices.

For a hot second I was struggling to think of who "adult stars" referred to. I mean I know of a couple who've been in mainstream movies - Asia Carrera was in The Big Lebowski, Nina Hartley in Boogie Nights - but...

Weird: your post seems to have been labelled "rude". I've never seen that before.

Well, no: I happen to agree that the whole thing is ridiculous. Or has been abused, anyway (the Simpsons Malk joke highlights why the regulations can / do serve a purpose when not misused to serve industry interests instead of consumers).

Um, bad example. Black pudding is literally the original "pudding" (the traditional etymology is that it's from OF / Anglo-Norman boudin, a family of blood sausages). There's a reason Robert Burns called haggis "great chieftain of the pudding race" (to Anglicise the Scots).

"literary fiction" even more so.

don't get me started on "new novel".
