How Detroit Became a Hub for Black Art A decade before the mainstream Black Arts Movement, Detroit underwent a transformation of its own, driven by Black artists who recognized a need for opportunities and community.

In 1958, Black art was not being shown in Detroit’s major institutions. Painter Harold Neal and his contemporaries started a collective of Black artists who created their own opportunities, marking the unofficial beginning of the city’s own Black arts movement.

This isn’t about face-to-face, but it is about buses: in traffic, let a bus leave its stop and go ahead of you, instead of zooming ahead of it and making it wait. Think of how many people’s days you can improve in one fell swoop. They’re being green, reducing traffic, and may be low-income. Do it.
