Comics page with speech balloon with inverted tail

Holy cow, you're right. Here's another one, in "School-boy on good time," same collected volume. I read these *after* One Piece, where I noticed the inverted tails all the time, so I'm kinda shocked I didn't notice them here. Yet more evidence that the "Otomo Revolution" in manga was real, I guess

Please believe me I take no pleasure in laying the credit for yet another innovation at Otomo’s feet…

Here’s another from one of the recent Otomo zenshu collections. This is “CHUCK CHECK CHICKEN” (1976).

Looking at some mid-Tokugawa movable type, and absolutely chuffed to see something fun. Our printed pre-printed lined paper before printing the text, leading to some funny registration bloopers. Usually the lines and text are all a single form. Not so here

Satomi Newsom and I published our translation of Kentaro Takekuma-sensei's chapter today from MANGA NO YOMIKATA on TCJ. I think it looks awesome! Great discussion of how drawing tools really matter.

We founded the U of Arizona Center for East Asian Studies three years ago with a US Dept of Education grant. Last Friday marked the end of year 3 of 4. Though the grant was for four years, we have not received word about year 4 funding. Without this support, we have no choice but to close down.

We don't really know for sure, as this is (of course) never explained explicitly back in the day, but we may assume several factors to be at work here, often simultaneously -- at least:

1) phonetic match
2) simplicity (basically as in low stroke count)
3) semantic considerations 1/

Interestingly the only appearance of 雫 in Chinese text is in the dictionary “Longkan Shoujian” 龍龕手鑑 (c. 997), compiled by the Khitan monk 行均 (Xingjun), which documented the pronunciations of 雫 (na, nuan) without providing any definition

So is this Kanji character 雫 Chinese or Japanese in origin? 🤔

Plain Chinese calligraphy, preserved on a song dynasty manuscript signed 1254.

A very rare Song dynasty #manuscript up for auction this week. A parting poem to a Zen student written by Chan Master Xutang Zhiyu 虛堂智愚 (1185-1269), signed and dated 1254. This is exactly the kind of poem and manuscript I studied at length in my book “The Poetry Demon.”
