Changes in Coastal Wetland Ecosystem Service Delivery under Mangrove Encroachment in Florida - Estuaries and Coasts The decreasing frequency of extreme cold events is driving mangrove encroachment into temperate salt marshes, altering the ecosystem service portfolio provided by these critical habitats. Straddling t...

The first 2026 publication is out and I am so excited! This lab effort (led by @emorywellman) reviews the ecosystem services changes as salt marshes transition to mangroves. We found some research holes including nutrient processing and fisheries provisioning.

New Paper Alert! Check out this group effort on salt marsh restoration in stressful environmental conditions (i.e., California drought). Spoiler: Vegetation success in this restoration project was contingent on whether the restoration occurred in a drought or rainy year!

๐Ÿ™ We need your help ๐Ÿ™

The government continues to cancel grants at both NIH and NSF to censor science it doesn't like.

We're tracking terminations to organize and advocate. Please report your terminated grants:

I forgot to post from the amazing Florida Sea Grant SEAS WAG meeting last week. But, as I sit here today watching more possible devastating cuts to NOAA, wanted to post a reminder that we are more than just weather - but coastal resilience. E.g, restoring mangroves destroyed by Hurricane Milton.

New paper t.co/q5YuiEZGLt led by @arizonastateuni.bsky.social PhD student Yilei Yu! 56% of flood-prone buildings in Houston are located outside of FEMAโ€™s 100-year flood zones. These โ€œoverlookedโ€ zones are disproportionately home to buildings that are lower quality and often uninsured.

The Trump administrationโ€™s attacks on scientific funding, restrictions on Federal scientist activities, and
indiscriminate firing have caused chaos, panic, and harm.

We need *specific* examples of harms caused
by these policies to include in an open letter.
Grants cut, projects cancelled, jobs lost.

Feel free to send news stories, blog posts, or social media posts that mention these, as well as original contributions.

Please send to WhySharksMatter @ gmail or DM me

โ€˜Despair is not an optionโ€™ โ€” how scientists can help protect federal research Government scientists in the US must be clear-eyed and continue to serve the public.

Federal scientists should know their rights, agency policies, and whistle-blower protections to safeguard scientific integrity.
