The California voter information guide booklet is open to pages showing the current and proposed congressional districts.

The California Voter Information Guide has never had so many maps! This is for the Statewide Special Election to temporarily change our congressional voting districts. There are 6 pages of maps! I wonder if the data is available somewhere... #gischat

Plus, who knows if anyone is ever gonna read NSF proposals again.

Having a bunch of publications with large lists of collaborators sounds amazing until you have to fill out one of the COA forms for NSF listing all of the people you've worked with for the last 4 years like it's a background check for the FBI.

My office at UC Davis is talking about running a class to communicate data science with art, mainly around making zines and one-page "cheat sheets".

I watched Reading Rainbow as a little kid and while I don't remember any episode specifically, I have a very vivid memory of my happy emotional response to the theme song. That song said something special was about to happen.

The more I read the comments I got back on a proposal the more I feel like the reviewer didn't actually read it. This is frustrating. I don't know how to make it more clear. I'm pretty sure it's gotta just be text and I can't put blinking arrows in this.

I love thrift store art! I have two modern paintings I picked up at my local SPCA thrift store. One turns out to be a known artist. The other, probably not, but I like it anyway.

I like that definition! I was thinking about the scientific method and, strictly applied, I think a lot of what we think of as science doesn't fit into that model.

I have to clearly articulate how something I want to do is science, which has sent me down a rabbit hole of understanding what "science" actually is. Even NSF doesn't seem to have a definition of science on their website, but maybe I missed it.

Does anyone have a good working definition?

I recently told a couple of high schoolers to keep an open mind about careers because my current career didn't even exist when I was in high school. Things are changing so fast right now, both in terms of tech and what's available in the public sector.

At my library's staff meeting this morning about the current university budget situation one thing was clear to me:

Libraries are people.

Every book, every service, every piece of furniture is there because a person decided this is what our community needs. And this is why cuts are so hard.

Both my cats are land sharks and one is also a sink otter. I'm pretty sure these classifications can simply modify the breeds listed here and are not separate breeds themselves.

I finally got the time and courage to sort through the feedback from my most recent NSF inquiry. The program officer flagged some parts of the solicitation that I didn't fully address. I thought I did, but there were some nuances I missed. Good! I can reframe and better explain some things.
