Iโ€™m having such a hard time to not be cynical about this mess. I just want things to get better :(

I donโ€™t watch many on going series so I donโ€™t really face this problem. That being said, Severance really felt special to me so I rewatched Season 1 with my girlfriend and it felt amazing to see all the characters I love so much again.

I really hope Burt and Irv will get back together somehow โค๏ธ

Time to dual-boot linux? ;)

So far all my games are working with minimal hassle.

So that would be the point with the maximum distance from the camera!

Since I can't post about my Xbox work โ€” and don't have any hobby projects on the go currently, I will do a thread about useful GPU tooling that's open access and/or open source.

Starting in next post:

A reverse depth buffer is amazing for floating point precision, but terrible for me trying to figure out if I need min/max or >/<. It just breaks my brain hahaha

a color coded image by Freya, comparing the summation and capital pi notation in math, to their equivalent in code using for-loops. The summation notation sums a set of elements, while the product notation multiplies a set of elements.

Note that Freya is keenly aware that neither the math notation nor for-loops are fully explained by this image, and that this is only a subset of the use cases, so luckily you don't have to explain that to her, in case you were considering doing that!

btw these large scary math symbols are just for-loops

For folks that know me as "the blue noise guy", I've put together a 50 minute video that talks about many of the things I've learned in my ~decade long dive into noise and related topics - up to and including our latest paper published days ago at I3D.
Enjoy!

HOME - Evolve Evolve is the next generation of GPU benchmarking. Built from the ground up for ray tracing and forward looking rendering techniques.

I have not had it in my machine yet, but we use it as a minspec for our benchmark full of ray tracing goodness which will be shipping at the end of the month.

Itโ€™s a super cute Intel Arc A310.
The smallest dedicated GPU that you can buy that has hardware ray tracing support.

Discworld QOTD, from Sourcery

"'I donโ€™t know what to do,' he said.

'No harm in that. Iโ€™ve never known what to do,' said Rincewind with hollow cheerfulness. 'Been completely at a loss my whole life.' He hesitated. 'I think itโ€™s called being human, or something.'"

I'm now imagining someone with a boat full of tiles trying to let them float on the water.

I also like the Dutch way to say this: "Loop naar de maan" or "Go walk to the moon"

DirectX Adopting SPIR-V as the Interchange Format of the Future - DirectX Developer Blog Today the Direct3D and HLSL teams are excited to share some insight into the next big step for GPU programmability. Once Shader Model 7 is released, DirectX 12 will accept shaders compiled to SPIR-Vโ„ข....

This seems like a big deal for graphics folks: devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/dire...
Makes me even more disappointed that SPIRV didn't get used for WebGPU

Oh yes 100%
But thatโ€™s not a reason to write new code bases in C++ instead of Rust

04.09.2024 15:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You only realize how absolutely horrible C++ is when you have gotten use to Rust programming and have to go back.

OMG even just the compiler, how is it THIS slow while it checks almost nothing compared to rustc.

How is the tooling THIS bad?

Why is it SO easy to shoot yourself in the foot.

The hardest part about being vegan is seeing your friends, colleagues and family do something that feels morally wrong to the deepest part of my soul while they donโ€™t see anything wrong.

The promise of Vulkan and DX12 was that third parties would create simpler layers on top, but we haven't seen many good ones.

20.06.2024 09:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Vulkan does become a bit easier if you ignore the rasterization pipeline. However, it's still a lot of manual work which can be great for a AAA game engine, but it's not for everyone.
