Hello #dataBS! I'm facilitating a new free @dslc.io Advanced #RStats adv-r.hadley.nz cohort soon! It's been 5+ years since I read this excellent book by @hadley.nz, so I'm giving it a re-read. Let's learn to embrace {{ tidy evaluation }}, purrr::reduce() repetition, and count S/R #OOP systems!

🚨Call for reading recommendations🚨

I’m developing a course on how social science interventions can(not) help address societal crises (e.g., climate, war, pandemics, inflation, polarization, so-called “migrant crisis” (or how societies deal with it)). Pls share your fav reads (self-rec welcome!!) 🙏

There's a lot of packages out there to download specific datasets, we wrote a framework to spider data on the internet, dry run to return the file list, and download 👇 it or sync 🫱 it to object storage

Hi #rstats! Does anyone know of any good free online self-paced comprehensive R video courses for complete beginners? Ideally, with interactive exercises that would be automatically checked, and the ability to gain certificates. Thanks!

Can Trump run for a third term? The 22nd Amendment flatly prevents it. Trump suggested he has “methods” for seeking a third presidential term. Constitutional law scholars are skeptical.

President Donald Trump has suggested that “methods” exist by which he could attempt to serve a third term in the White House, an act that is barred by the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Constitutional law scholars are skeptical.

30Days of Charts starts tomorrow, and I'm excited to join #30DayChartChallenge again!

This year, I’m aiming for 10 charts throughout the month.
To stay efficient, I’ll set a 60-minute timer for each chart—otherwise, I tend to spend way too long fine-tuning the details.

Image shows faceted scatterplots of pokemon dataset. Attack is on the x-axis, and defense is on the y-axis. The primary pokemon color is indicated with the color of the points, and the charts are faceted by pokemon type. The breakdown highlights a somewhat linear relationship between attack and defense for most pokemon types. For the most part, they are correlated, with defense and attack increasing together. There is less variance between the two variables when type is "dragon", "electric", or "normal". Noticeable types that break this trend are "rock" type pokemon. In addition, there are a few outliers, such as a "bug" type with a near-zero attack and defense above 200 hp.

The cost of messy data and the hours spent on data cleaning frequently comes up in conversation in data science circles.

It's so often the same cost figures and percentages, but... are there any good, recent academic papers on the cost of messy data that #StatsSky could share with me?

So disappointing that Harvard is terminating ongoing faculty searches. You'd think that with their resources they could complete these searches and then pause future searches. Apart from the huge waste of everyone's time, it's devastating for the candidates. My heart goes out to them.

Very nice short piece about how siloed research is insufficient (and inappropriate!) to solve the problems that need solving. We need more transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, and more thinking about the 'so what' rather than just the 'why' or 'what'. 🧪
