23.09.2025 05:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I am still extremely nervous and vulnerable about releasing something that is so personal and close to my heart into the world, so their kind words gave me a great deal of encouragement, especially in these unsettling times. Thank you so much! π
23.09.2025 05:42 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0"By bringing her own extraordinary ethnographic and historical analyses of K-pop into dialogue with existing literature on fandom and performance, Jeong vividly and sensitively communicates the novelty and significance of K-pop in South Korea to the fandom studies literature. This book will be an important text for scholars, educators, and students of Korean media studies. Jeong's book will be a seminal touchstone in the field of K-pop studies for many years to come." - Thomas Baudinette, Macquarie University
"In writings about K-pop, my ultimate bias is Areum Jeong. In K-Pop Fandom, she deftly explores how the practices of K-pop fans are culturally significant and meaningful. Analyzing labor and identity practices, narrative and storytelling, and political resistance, Jeong's work moves far beyond the specifics of music to examine the power of audiences today. This is required reading for scholars and fans of K-pop." - Paul Booth, DePaul University
"Areum Jeong's K-Pop Fandom is brilliantly focused on fans' affective labor and its many materializations. Paying careful attention to the industrial forces of K-pop, Jeong analyzes the issue of excessive consumption alongside fans' community and independently published memoirs that seek to evade the enclosures of neoliberal capitalism. Smart and immersive, this is a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the passions and practices of K-pop fandom." - Matt Hills, author of Fan Cultures
"Keen analysis of music industry trends and fan labor blends seamlessly with Jeong's thoughtful foray down memory lane, which positions her at the forefront of K-pop's past and present, both as a witness and active participant. This book feels intimate and exploratory, delving deeper into the concept of deokhu for English-language scholarship while interrogating the connection between fan labor, fan expectation, and fanaticism." - Tamar Herman, author of BTS: Blood, Sweat & Tears
My editor forwarded me the beautiful and generous endorsements that fan culture experts wrote for my K-Pop Fandom book. I know they are very busy folks, so I am grateful for the time they took to read and respond to my work. π

#OpEd: "We canβt bury the deeper, driving forces behind why this is happening. This phenomenon is only possible because of the outsized power that state agents β ICE, police officers, prison staff β have always had to abuse and control women and victims' bodies." Read the full story here. β¬οΈ

Same -- I have been doing mostly in-class close reading and writing reflections this semester and it is going well so far.
22.09.2025 18:28 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 02. More in-class assignments, less homework (or lower stakes homework). I have students engage in discussion/applied activities during class and then hand-write exit ticket reflections before leaving. This gives me a sense of what they understand and gives them time to practice thinking and writing.
22.09.2025 17:26 β π 160 π 8 π¬ 1 π 2I cannot tell you how grim the AI in higher ed situation is. Many of the students have completely surrendered to letting AI do their homework, badly, I might add. How do you fix this? Truly, what the hell do we do, beyond what grading can address, which isn't a solution?
