With the threats being levied against NOAA, I felt it was time to download all the sediment core and paleoceanography data being stored on NOAA's NCEI, just in case. I have uploaded the script to Github, just in case anyone wants to do the same! 🧪 ⚒️ 🦣 🌊

Key findings:

➡️ The Younger Dryas cooling started c. 150 years after the eruption
➡️ Climate change propagated rapidly from the North Atlantic to central Europe
➡️ Precise chronologies are so important for understanding past climate events and their relevance to current climate change!

This is a team effort with my great colleagues from
@uniheidelberg.bsky.social and @unimainz.bsky.social

We discovered the LSE as sulfur spike in the speleothem. Absolute Th/U dating links the speleothem record with ice cores. As a result, we've precisely dated the LSE to 13,008 ± 8 years ago!

Discovery of Laacher See eruption in speleothem record synchronizes Greenland and central European Late Glacial climate change A volcanic sulfur spike links the Laacher See eruption to Greenland ice cores and synchronizes the timelines to European records.

Excited to share our latest research published in @science.org #ScienceAdvances! 🎉
We've discovered the Laacher See eruption 🌋 in a speleothem from Germany, which allows to synchronize European and Greenland Late Glacial climate change.

For #speleothem experts: We use trace elements (Mg/Ca) to derive semi-quantitative cool season precipitation amount and combine that with stable isotopes 💪. The result shows: dynamic - (not thermodynamic) processes determine precipitation variability.
