Such an interesting question. Portugal like Ireland and Italy had consistently high emigration rates throughout the modern era. Does the answer lie in regional patterns of settlement in late 19th/early 20th-century NY, PA, MA, & IL in urban centers where ethnicity crystallized in particular forms?
