Laadukas voi tarkoittaa myös enemmän "määritellyn standardin mukaista" kun taas hyvä leijuu enemmän ilmassa, on tavallaan vahvempi statement. Mutta toki välillä vaan pelkkää kapulakieltä.

I had the pleasure of talking with Anna Zhelnina at @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social #sociology podcast about our book Youth participation and Democracy.
We have a whole chapter on online nazi-adjacent transgression which honestly feels a bit too topical atm

The call for papers for the Annual Sociological Conference 2025 in Turku (20.-21.3.2025) is now open: sosiologipaivat.fi/2025-esitelm... ! Me and @veikkoeranti.bsky.social are chairing the Political sociology group, so go submit for cutting edge democracy etc research & great vibes, dl 31.1.2025 🫶🏻

03.12.2024 06:46 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0The book is really good, includes a combination of ethnography and bid data sociology, makes an ambitious theoretical argument about using pragmatist and cultural sociology to understand participation, and has a ton of empirically interesting examples. Ask me for a discount code if interested!
02.12.2024 12:15 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0We followed youth councils, climate activists, cooked and hung out with marginalized people. We trained neural network to analyze 800 000 messages from imageboards. We tried to understand how all this participation works, and ended up calling it all different ways and cultures of doing society.

And on that note, I have a book out with bunch of good colleagues!
Youth Participation and Democracy: Cultures of Doing Society is about what it says on the label!

Anna-Maija Castrén and Markku Lonkila present a laborous micro-level social netwrok data collection in Helsinki and St. Petersburg. Deep micro data to say something about macro relations.

Also: Alapuro was bringing together the divergent poles of political sociology, the institutionalized forms and the action of the people.

Hannu Uusitalo presents one of Risto Alapuro's last academic works, his re-examination of his own teacher, Erik Allardt – Sociology as a language of modernization.
Risto claims that Allardt was succesful because he was able to use Drukheimian theory to understand Finnish solidarity and modernization
Naturally, many sad stories about personal destinies. People were expelled to Karelia, or executed, as many in these communities were.
Interestingly, many of the members did not speak Russian, even though many were second-generation colonists, and had lived in the USSR for decades.

The study is based on protocols of communist local party chapter.
Ideological work shifts from pedagogical approach in 1935 to party history and nation-building and indoctrination to a much more tightly controlled system in 1938. From external to internal enemies of the people.

Aappo Kähönen speaks about his research on a Finnish settler community on the Murmansk coast in the soviet union in the 1930s.
Pohjantähti ('North star') was Kolkhoz in Bielyi Kamen, with party activists who either left voluntarily or fled after the failed revolution in Finland.

Also the importance of situated action:
"People don't necessarily start a revolution to change the order of things, it is the revolutionary process that radicalizes participants"
Maurice Carrez challenged Risto's integrative vision of the Finnish revolution / civil war: if one looks at other parts of Finland than Huittinen were Risto did his micro-historical work, social cleavages were deeper.
05.12.2023 12:09 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Today we celebrate (and even re-examine) the personal and intellectual legacy of Risto Alapuro, our teacher and friend.
We start from rethinking state and revolution, and the role of revolutionary class-conflict in Finland 1917. Later, we re-examine Finland as an organization state.
