Independent left-wing politician Connolly wins Irish presidency in landslide Catherine Connolly, a veteran lawmaker on the far left of the Irish political spectrum, was elected president by a landslide margin on Saturday in a stinging rebuke to the recently re-elected centre-right coalition.

Can’t say I know much about the powers of the Irish president but it’s interesting that this woman ran as a left-wing independent, won 63% of the vote, was lauded by her opponent, and is succeeding the man who took his adorable dogs everywhere. Seems a proper country.
