That mindset ended up being really helpful for any supervision, because there were always wonderful students who saw limitations as failures. But good research knows that limitations are inevitable, and it's a display of skill to identify where they are and work within them.

Yes! During my PhD I'd get the classic "so, how were exams?" questions at home, which helped me find my simplified explanation of what the task is: I'm writing an exam that I'll eventually have to take, and if it's too easy then I won't get credit, and if it's too hard then I won't be able to do it.
