SCTV - "Pre-Teen Telethon" dance routine - Andrea Martin & Catherine O'Hara (1982)
Have been rewatching favorite Catherine O’Hara SCTV sketches and was reminded that she and Andrea Martin performed what’s more or less the DOGTOOTH dance. (They’re playing 11- or 12-year-olds but the effect’s quite similar.) youtu.be/NMKFl14o_BA?...

I’ll honor Fennell’s wishes but it’s kinda goofy (whereas I totally get it for say “ABOUT LAST NIGHT…” which can be seen as quoted dialogue). Makes it seem like a sarcastic “Yeah I made [air quotes] ‘Wuthering Heights’ lol.”

Drug dealer’s couch preferable to the mat on the floor you and I shared your first year at Cannes, I’d wager.

Glad she finally got The Sketch. Few people can make me laugh so hard with a two-word line that wouldn’t be particularly funny on paper.

I imagine the idea’s “ooo, volcano action!” or whatever. But anyone drawn in by that will be sorely disappointed.

Great idea, MUBI, let's go back and make sure all of Rosi's docs sport more helpful titles.

Catherine O'Hara as Margaret Meehan (SCTV/"High Q")
I believe this sketch was the first time I saw her, somehow getting laughs just from the way she says stuff like “The Beatles.” youtu.be/YIKWAgFsIYk?...

Fell in love with Catherine O’Hara at age 14 when I used to sneak out of bed to watch SCTV at 12:30am. The second screenplay I wrote, in 1991, was meant (in my young delusional mind) for her to star in—a mostly non-comedic role that I was certain she could pull off. Was not ready for this yet.

Yeah I tended to wing it at Sundance. Sometimes the movie turned out to be BRICK. Sometimes it was SOMEBODIES (which has a grand total of 15 Lbox views, including me).

I still think of it as the opening track of RUBBER SOUL. (Have owned the UK version of RUBBER SOUL that opens with “Drive My Car” for almost 40 years.)

I did wind up spending $100 on certain laserdiscs (CAV special editions). In fact they were so expensive even at the low end that I took a laserdisc-store job mostly so that I could buy them at cost (plus I got points for selling Pioneer players, which points could be redeemed for movies).

With deliberate irony I plan to spend this on a Criterion box set.

Perhaps that did happen in L.A. Not likely anywhere else, though. I worked retail all over one of the country’s largest cities (San Jose) at the time and never saw it. Video stores bought 50 copies of hot new releases and then sold 46 of them used fairly cheap when demand died down.

I would say “entirely” rather than “mostly.” Do not recall any store selling VHS movies for $80+, ever. You had to buy those from a supplier that catered to video stores. (If you really wanted the tape now and were willing to splurge maybe you could have a store order it for you as a favor.)

(Well, maybe not a Congressional investigation. One that might accomplish something.)

We need a Congressional investigation into what happened to Paul Haggis (and Robert Moresco) between EZ STREETS and CRASH.
