This piece not even mentioning THE DESCENDANTS makes me feel very old. (Thankfully I already did!)

I liked both Volumes better on second viewing. But VOL. 2 remains my least favorite of his films. (Still pro!)

I only watched 10 minutes of the Marlee Matlin doc but got to see a still of the cast list for the production of LESSER GOD in which she was found, around 1985…which also starred Paul Raci.

We’re fast approaching the point at which literally every calendar date for the rest of human history will be considered “on the eve of an election.” Like feeding mogwai after midnight. It’s always after midnight!

Update: NYC release is 20 March. (They could theoretically still do a qualifying run this month, but I don’t think that’s the plan.)

Sigh. No need for a WAY OF WATER refresher, then. Since the new film itself apparently serves that function.

Is it three hours of that one hour? Or that one hour replicated as FIRE AND ASH’s third hour? I fear you’re saying it’s the latter.

Oh for fuck’s sake. (My first time encountering this, dunno how long it’s been happening. It’s not on everything, yet.)

I mean I’ll take more of WATER’s kick-ass third hour. Otherwise pass. (Odds are I will not in fact pass.)

Half-watching the Alicia Silverstone Fake Hallmark Christmas Movie with my folks and while it’s the usual formulaic nonsense I gotta say Silverstone (who I’ve seen only in Lanthimos films for the past like 20 years) is quite a deft comedienne. (Also Jameela Jamil is in it basically doing Tahani.)

My 80-year-old dad still insists on climbing ladders to place Xmas decorations in ridiculously high places.

Fun fact: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE might be closer to the present day (212 years) than it is to HAMLET (214–212 years depending upon whether it was first performed in 1599, 1600 or 1601). Almost precisely equidistant regardless.

Did that behavior spontaneously emerge? I doubt it. (In any case I was referring more to the AI getting bored.)

We need to redefine the Turing test such that an artificial intelligence can be said to have consciousness, or to genuinely think, if and only if, without being expressly programmed to do so, it tells its interlocutor to shut the fuck up about that, enough already.

If you can claim it’s a sincerely held *religious* belief, you’re home free, because we ludicrously continue to privilege those as if they’re, well, sacrosanct.

(Also I never buy the apparently irresistible-to-some-writers scene in which the person feigns “I really like/admire you” for an extended period then finally lets the mask drop and reveals that in fact “I HATE YOU HATE YOU HATE YOU AH-HA-HA-HA!”)

I sat agog at the audition flashback, which proved not only to be dramatically superfluous but also kinda undermined any sense that Kelly had behaved badly. (Unless that was the intent, in which case Ugh, so it’s a poor choice regardless.)

It’s been decades since I read the play, had forgotten many of the funniest bits.

I somehow discovered ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD quite young (definitely before the film came out; might’ve been via BRAZIL) and it was formative, literally enlarging my sense of dramaturgical possibility whilst instilling a delight in wordplay and badinage that persists to this day. R.I.P.

Just saw JAY KELLY at a theater that I last visited when it was showing (first-run) Woody Allen’s ANOTHER WOMAN. Now heading to see HAMNET at a theater I’m pretty sure I haven’t been to since JOHNNY HANDSOME.
