The Toronto barriers seem really promising and a good balance of all those factors, but I think availability is still an issue on those.

Great point! I think it mostly comes down to cost to build, cost to maintain, availability of materials, and ease of maintenance. EMW is a pretty unique corridor since they were able to make it one-way and free up all that space during construction.

This project on 130th is a good example. Grade separated bike lanes are in design and coming soon. We’ll have to wait a couple years for these but in the meantime we have flex posts.

It’s a lower cost, incremental improvement that can help create network connectivity sooner. Most concrete protected bike lanes in the city started out with flex posts. They serve their purpose but, yes, should not be considered all ages and abilities or permanent.

Tonight the @cityofmlt.bsky.social council votes on a contract with Flock “Safety” license plate reader cameras. With all their talk about privacy, what’s in the actual contract is astonishing. It gives Flock the right to share the footage with anyone, including ICE, for essentially any reason.

Little Bill was a beloved staple of Tour de Terrace, MLT’s annual summer festival—playing nearly every year until the pandemic. It feels fitting, in a bittersweet way, that organizers announced plans to sunset the festival this year after a 30-year run.
