A few weeks have now passed since QLD took away my Fellowship, and what I am still sure of:
I did nothing wrong. I've nothing to be ashamed of. I've no regrets.
The shame is in staying silent, letting fear win, allowing bullies to silence us.

From the river to the sea,
Always was always will be.

600 days in the genocide

I watch a little girl, named flower, named Ward, turn Into an inferno. l've seen so many people burn I can't recall if flame had another purpose.
People keep saying, it's always been like this:
Human fuel in empire's engine. Understand
Then, if you are not the one fed to the fire,
You are the engine. There must have been
A time before the engine, I swear,
Before we became parts in a machine
And everything was reduced
To action or inaction. This ballot,
That purchase, any small intimacy
Crackles and spits into: did you grease
The gears today, or save your resistance
For an hour when your life is on the line?
What if life is always on the line?
How long will you live in the crosshairs
Of someone else's permission, how many daughters / Will you consign to the flame of your convenience?

600 days in the genocide

The hour is late as l usher my sons to bed.
My family is watching a game called State
Of Origin where men from all over the world
Claim tribal heritage to land not their own.
I can't stop thinking of Ward, who survived
And of Shaaban al-Dalou, who did not.
My babies, strangers to hardship, whimper
In the dark as if they, too, can feel the heat
Licking at their hands and feet. When we
Dream, scientists say we enter paralysis:
A safety mechanism to keep us from rolling
Into the campfire, or off a cliff. Some of us
Are blessed with broken mechanisms,
Some of us walk even in our sleep.
I watch, God forgive me not, I keep watch
When I should be running towards the blaze.

Michelle de Kretser’s 2025 acceptance speech

"Unlike the women and girls of Gaza, I’m not brave. Fear is a formidable and insidious opponent. It convinces us to censor ourselves, to obey in advance, to down the Kool-Aid before it’s been offered. I’m still afraid. But I’ve just accepted a prize that is not about obedience."

In yet another sign of the depraved times we’re living in, tomorrow, 15 May, is not only Nakba Day—when Palestinians commemorate 77 years of their ongoing ethnic cleansing—but it is also the day Yuval Raphael will be whitewashing genocide on the collaborator stage of @ebu.ch’s @eurovision.tv.
