Obviously, no mainstream outlet is going to let Palestinians have a voice about our own recognition, and many "progressive" publications are not much better. We should be hearing from Palestinians right now. If you're in a position to commission something, please contact me.

There is no doubt that Labor leadership will try to claim that this is the end of the road and there is no more they can do for Palestine. We need to continue to hold them to account. Call this a win, celebrate, but we need to fight for widespread sanctions and an arms embargo.

I wrote this before October 7. At the time, the idea that diplomatic recognition of Palestinian statehood would improve anything on the ground was laughable. Now, in the face of genocide, it’s dangerously negligent. We need sanctions and an arms embargo now, not recognition.

Consider: this is positive, feel-good story. It's an example of community work that does something tangible for 'social cohesion'. At the very least, it made children happy. But if the racist, right-wing press got onto it, they would have tried to destroy it. Too bad for them. 😇
