Usually I don't look at comments on social media, but I have been deeply troubled by the number of posts about 'zionist false flag operations! This is not only deeply offensive, it is a conspiracy theory that falsely externalises the home grown issues of prejudice and racism that exist in the UK to a foreign entity, with zero evidence.

That doesn't mean we can't have serious conversations about how Israel's actions increase the vulnerability of Jewish communities around the world - of course we can. But these conversations need to be handled with intentionality and care for all involved - including Jewish people. If you're first thought when you see an attack on a synagogue on Yom Kippur is to say 'well Israel must be behind it, you need to interrogate that - and maybe log off.

I love being Jewish. I love our traditions, I love learning Jewish texts. When I saw the news of the attack in Manchester, I thought of my father; how he likes gets to Shul early because he doesn't want the rabbi to have to wait for a minyan. The men who were killed were probably doing the same. It's heartbreaking. I also know many other communities share this fear, especially our Muslim siblings. I hope our synagogues are full this weekend as they bring in Shabbat, even with this fear so present. Good Shabbes. May the memories of those killed be for a blessing.

I know exactly how I felt after the Christchurch massacre. This is how many are feeling now in the wake of the Manchester attack. Sure, I agree that politicians + the press didn't take the killing of 51 Muslims as seriously. But we don't need to be as heartless as they are. (2/2)

This last 24 hours have been wretched. The attack in Manchester is horrific antisemitic violence. My heart goes out to the community, the victims and their family and friends. No Jewish person should face or risk violence going to synagogue or participating in Jewish life. Thank you to everyone who reached out and checked in.

The worst outcome of this attack would be for it to be used as justification for further divide and rule politics: increased surveillance and policing of muslim communities, further attacks on the Palestine movement, increased police powers et al. Acknowledging this likely scenario (Tommy Robinson is already in full swing) does not take away from the grief and fear so many Jews are feeling today.

Rather, we must understand how our grief is politicised by those who care very little about our actual wellbeing, to degrade and target others. We must say loudly and clearly that this is unacceptable. The only way we defeat racialised violence is by fighting for a world we look out for each other, where our safety and wellbeing is seen as intertwined.

The UK is increasingly a hostile place to minorities and marginalised communities. Muslim communities, asylum seekers, trans folks, and Jewish communities are all at risk from the far-right resurgence, extremism and a Government that prefers fuelling culture wars than building a clear alternative to this racist and violent politics. We are in dire straits.

Last year, Israel bombed Gaza on Yom Kippur. It demolishes Palestinian homes on Yom Kippur. It holds Palestinians hostage in Israeli prisons on Yom Kippur. This year, Israel will attack the Sumud Flotilla on Yom Kippur. There is no more perfect example of Chillul HaShem (a desecration of G-d) than the actions of the State of Israel.

For Palestinians it doesn't matter what Jewish holiday it is, except maybe as a marker of what kind of violence to expect. I was in the village of Al Mufaqara, in Masafer Yatta, in September 2021, on Simchat Torah. Settlers from Chavat Maon, drunk from celebrating the receipt of the Torah from Sinai, committed a violent pogrom against the village, destroying cars, slashing water tanks and smashing glass. They threw bricks through windows of homes, cracking the skull of a four year old boy. He was transferred to a hospital in 48' Israel and his parents were denied a permit by the Israeli Civil Administration to visit him.

As our symbols & traditions continue to be turned into weapons of destruction, so many Jews will sit in synagogue and repent for the year's| sins. The calamity of genocide and apartheid will mostly go unsaid unseen, unheard. But it is there, glaring up at us from our machzorim, scrawled in the gaps between prayers. The injustice of this current moment surrounds us, rendering our atonement mute and hollow.

I am so grateful to the rabbis and religious leaders, who confront with their whole hearts, the desecration of our communities, our liturgy, our symbols as they are wielded in the service of obliterating Gaza. Their courage is a balm on our broken souls. In 5786, may we wrestle back our Jewish morality.
