With a new government term in 2025, Minister Tim Ayres may revisit previous decisions on space projects. The space sector must effectively communicate the importance of satellites for our national well-being and security. It's time to advocate how space supports "Future Made in Australia."

In 2023, Australia scrapped a billion-dollar project for Earth-observation satellites, and in 2024, a $7 billion military-grade satellite communications system was also cancelled. These decisions raise concerns about our national security and technological advancement

Last week, WRegSAT I Workshop 1, an ACSG initiative hosted by UNSW Canberra with support from Gilbert + Tobin, brought together experts to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Australia’s space regulatory framework. An Australian Space Agency representative also attended.

Since I wrote this in Oct on the need for opening dialogue on space governance between the US-led Artemis and China-led ILRS frameworks, Thailand has just become the first nation to join both.
