Shout out to the menus in the Taiwanese DVD btw, they're truly a work of art.

The same shot, but from the French DVD, which has colors much more saturated, with the puppets' skins turning almost or completely white as a result.

I wanna bring special attention to this shot because its one of the more notable instances of the French DVD looking like total shit compared to the Taiwanese one.

And the final comparison (for now). I didn't mess with mixing of the parts that only play music (this and the opening and ending credits) all that much aside from the busted panning but this scene shows very well the color differences between DVDs. This is the Taiwanese version.

The previously shown Jack and Milly talking scene where she gets cropped, from the Taiwanese DVD. The background is a dark blue wall with some lines on it.

The same shot in the French DVD. The background has become almost completely black aside from the top left and bottom right corners, and the lines across the wall can barely be made out.

That said though, the French DVD has its issues. That saturation can lead to some detail to be lost. Look at this shot again. In the Taiwanese DVD the wall is all dark blue and you can see some lines on it, while in French its almost totally black and the lines can barely be seen.

The Taiwanese footage is also noticeably more muted, with more subtle color, compared to the French DVD's more vibrant and saturated look (which, when compared to promo art, seems to be more correct). Some scenes even have noticeably different color hues depending on the version.

Another issue with the Taiwanese DVD is that it appears to have been poorly converted from PAL (25fps) to NTSC (30fps), which added ghost frames in between proper frames.

A screenshot of a scene where Milly is talking to Jack. Only part of Milly's face can be seen due to the crop to 4:3.

The same exact shot, but in the French DVD, with the original 16:9 aspect ratio. Here, much more of Milly's face can be seen, along with her upper torso, which was completely hidden behind the crop in the Taiwanese DVD.

Now, you notice that this is using different footage in widescreen.

This is another issue with the English copy, it was cropped to 4:3, despite the movie being made with 16:9 in mind. Some scenes have characters talking who get cut-off in 4:3. The 16:9 footage is from the French DVD.

The ratio of music tracks compared to the single VA track is the reason why the dub as is sounds so bad, the music tracks completely drown out the voices, and it doesn't help that some of the delivery (specially from the female characters) is quiet and reserved to begin with.

Here's how it sounds:

As it turns out, the copy we have of the English version (sourced from a Taiwanese DVD) has its audio separated into different tracks, 2 for the main music, 2 for the music reverb + some SFX, 1 for very bassy SFX and, most importantly, 1 for the voices and most of the SFX.

Been thinking about this little known animated movie named CarnivalΓ© for the last few days. Its English dub was only found recently.

However, said dub is VERY badly mixed, to the point of being unwatchable. Messing with it though, I found out that it can be fixed, which is what I'm doing RN!

I'm thinking of doing another media thread this year just because i'm prob not going to play or watch a lot of stuff since i'm so hyperfocused on getting a demo for Blutkapelle done rn

Like we're in February already and I've only played/watched a single piece of media in full so far

Bowling Alley level opening, with it's proper graphics I'm working on now that the level design is done.

Fun Fact: This level (along with most ones in the game) is set on a real life location!
