Why is Mars red? Scientists may finally have the answer A new study shows a water-rich mineral could explain the planet's color -- and hint at its wetter, more habitable past.

Turns out Mars’ red color comes from ferrihydrite, a mineral that forms in wet environments. So the planet wasn’t always dryβ€”it had a past, a history.

Now it just sits there, covered in dust, reminding us that things change and not always for the better.
