Heading to Sapporo this fall for Models of Consciousness 2025! 🥰🧠 My talk "How to Miss a Mind" will explore how we might be fundamentally misreading AI "minds" - when latent spaces and hallucinations might some interesting noise.

I dom't know about fear, but a certain kind of deception in alignment faking is possible, and that's really intriguing. It all still boils down to AI ethics and XAI. And the rest on qualia :)

Thanks! Fungi are fascinating as well. I was just finishing a paper on fungal memory as minimal cognition, but plants have the same - "knowing" the time, "remembering" touches and perturbations, and even sending nutrients to fellows in need.

Can you see circles or rectangles? And does the answer depend on where you grew up? | Anil Seth We may believe we see the world exactly as it is – but as studies of optical illusions show, it’s far more complex than that, says cognitive and computational neuroscience professor Anil Seth

Do you see circles or rectangles? How culturally dependent is perceptual experience? Inspired by two recent studies, I wrote this for today's @theguardian.com: www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

We stood at the edge of #Háifoss, just us, the wind, and 122 meters of raw vertical awe. In that strange silence, we did what any normal people would do: wondered what ancient flood carved this, felt very small, and then calculated it would take about 5 secs to fall straight down.

In #Iceland this week for #BEACON2025, giving a talk on #astrobiology and how it messes with our idea of what counts as science, along with burning AI issues.

The landscape is fitting: craters, lava fields and the feeling that you've left Earth already.

Idk if someone noticed, but this is a nice statistical distribution church of St. Laplace. 😁

Iceland, see you in a week🥰

Is astrobiology a real science? Yes, but it tests falsifiability’s edge. Life we don't know is hard to rule out, false positives and negatives haunt the field - but that tension IS science

Poppies! I rarely see them here. They were usuaally growing next to railways.

Looks heavenly!

Had the best time in Prague at the Ernst Mach Workshop, wonderfully organized by @tmarvan.bsky.social, @jakubmihalik.bsky.social and @sfink.bsky.social, with amazing talks by @anilseth.bsky.social, Kathinka Evers, and young scholars like @mokriegleder.bsky.social. looking forward to coming back! 🥰

Thrilled that my book "The Illusion Engine: The Quest for Machine Consciousness", will be published by @springernature.com

Can machines ever be truly conscious? And if so, could we discern the emergence of inner experiences from an AI hallucination?

Draft available! :)

I've been there in 2019, I'm still recovering financially. 🤣 I was in Lapland this summer and I expected the same shock, but there wasn't any since apparently I got used to inflation. "Oh eggs are $5, okay, same as back home". That was sad.

I booked one in Iceland. Conference fee is 500€. Hotels are so expensive they suggested camping sites. I'm seriously considering that 🤣

Reasoning models - those trained specifically for that, i.e. fine-tuned - are really good for specialized tasks like that. I'd like to see the perception among students for these as well one day, especially combined with some RAG-tuned philosophy knowledge base. It gets eerily good!
