13.07.2025 20:19 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Re slavers/fascists. What's your take on the idea, which I associate with VDH but I doubt it originates with him, that armies from democracies always (usually?) defeat totalitarian armies? It's so embedded in triumphalist narratives of Western Civ that to me it's suspect on its face
13.07.2025 20:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Even better
13.07.2025 19:36 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Latests PI includes Jennifer Roberts on Thucydides: "A whole book could easily be written on the use and abuse of Thucydides in the United States alone over the past hundred years." I hope someone will take this up!
13.07.2025 11:26 β π 17 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0I wrote about Latin on state flags & colonial violence for Pharos. I intended to publish on Flag Day but then a terrorist assassinated a MN State Rep and we start w MNs new flag. Monday after July 4th is another good time for thinking about nationalist symbols pharos.vassarspaces.net/2025/07/07/l...
07.07.2025 12:40 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0It's so frustrating, my institution has a repository but it's designed in a way that search engines can't find and those running it are indifferent to that fact (I guess they see it as purely archival?); meanwhile stuff on academia shows up well in search. Other options you're aware of now?
02.07.2025 14:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Musk, regretting the world he brought about, says he's now all about empathy, which he recently said was "the fundamental weakness of Western Civilization." I wrote about how that view dovetails well with white nationalist thought about Greco-Roman antiquity: pharos.vassarspaces.net/2025/04/25/e...
01.07.2025 21:47 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Those of us trying to do critical work in Classics are sometimes told we are risking too much in a hostile higher ed climate and guess what, they were coming for us anyway no matter what we did
01.07.2025 15:33 β π 21 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0Yes, also better news for engagement elsewhere, I feel like 25-34 elsewhere has a better chance of turning out than 18-24 elsewhere

01.07.2025 01:57 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I agree with this, for all his name recognition Cuomo was weak in NYC, the dude couldn't even claim to eat a bagel for breakfast, so I'm excited about Mamdani but wondering how it transfers

26.06.2025 18:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also his beard! I can't grow one myself but it made me think about how few politicians have that (last president: Taft!)/why that might be and then inevitably I think of Hadrian whose beard we learned about in HS and only now am I like huh I guess that was a big deal & not just some wacky factoid
26.06.2025 18:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This makes me realize I don't know how to learn where my scholarship has been cited! How did you learn about this cite?
26.06.2025 13:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One of the ways this formulation of it became popular is its catchy/legible name, yes, but also the veneer or intellectual depth that the originator of this version (of a much older idea) bestowed upon it. His analysis of Plato is one of the ways he produced that appearance of depth 2/
25.06.2025 18:59 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Here we have a prominent political commentator and white house advisor promoting the white nationalist Great Replacement conspiracy theory. The man who gave it that name began his analysis with a discussion of a Platonic dialogue. 1/ pharos.vassarspaces.net/2019/10/07/g...

18.06.2025 14:06 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The terrorist in MN who murdered Melissa and Mark Hortman named his security company "Praetorian Guard Security Services." It's just a small piece of the picture, but when so many representations of ancient Rome idealize violence, a certain number of people are going to take that to heart
16.06.2025 12:22 β π 28 π 5 π¬ 2 π 0A few years ago I shared a version of my syllabus. It's a good course and the students get a lot out of it. 13.06.2025 13:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Since 2008 I've taught a course on Classical Rhetoric and the Presidential Campaign. We always learn a ton, and we never just focused on speeches, but this article speaks to what has haunted me every time, that what we're looking at just doesn't matter

@eyesontheright.bsky.social
& others are saying. It only took a few years. I've added the knowledge that Greco-Roman antiquity played a role in establishing and promoting it but that's such trivial addition in comparison to what the theory has done
It was bad enough that the conspiracy theory was inspring lone wolf terrorists. But Robert Pape's research on the Jan 6 insurrection found that belief in the Great Replacement conspiracy theory was the "key driver" of participation in the attack 5/ d3qi0qp55mx5f5.cloudfront.net/cpost/i/docs...
