Max hourly mean of SO2 reached 1400 ug/m3 during Holuhraun and over 1900 this morning. The current eruption is tiny compared to Holuhraun but much closer to urban areas.

The current #eruption on Reykjanes is causing remarkable #airpollution in urban areas. SO2 in Reykjavík has exceeded that measured during the large eruption of Holuhraun in 2014. Picture of the volcanic pollution from my window 🧵

#Eruption nr 9 in the Reykjanes-Svartsengi system started on 16 July. The plume of SO2 and fine particulates is causing #airpollution in North and North West Iceland, which is a bit unusual. Also it's reaching the East coast of Greenland today! Image credit #Iceland Met Office

I treated myself with a day in the Lake District to celebrate end of teaching term. I did the scrambly climb up Great Gable and the weather was an absolute dream, no wind whatsoever and clear skies. What a treat!

But I cannot forget the effect that this information had on the ministers. One of them was holding their temples while another perpetually twirled a ring on their ring finger. All of them were pale, completely stunned. This will probably be the most unforgettable day at work for me."

I remember that it felt uncomfortable to put forward such a big number and it was difficult to believe that it could actually be this large. Scientific papers that have been published since concluded that this value (the peak flow rate) had been closer to 7500 cubic meters per second.

I explained to the trio that this was the estimated location of a large magma intrusion that we believed was in the process of forming. A conservative estimate of the flow rate into the dyke was 2500 cubic meters per second.

"A year ago I was sat in front of a large computer screen at IMO. Behind me stood 3 cabinet ministers. On my screen was a map that I'd just finished putting together. The map showed an approx 15 km long line that touched the western side of Grindavik and stretched north beyond Fagradalsfjall...

Once upon a time I went #bikepacking through #Patagonia. It started with a very painful ride up Osorno #volcano followed by 2 weeks and ~1100 km through Chile and Argentina. I kept a travel blog but didn't get round to posting it. Until now :) medium.com/@e.ilyinskaya
