Quite a fascinating passage from here interpreting Britain’s WWII mythos (Dunkirk, the Blitz) an expression of traditional Protestant providentialism. Implies it was not so much WWII itself that united postwar Britain but a particularly Protestant interpretation of its significance!

Learning from this that not only did the Welsh historically refer to the English simply as β€˜Saxons’, but Scottish Highlanders also saw the English and Scots speaking Lowlaners and the English collectively as β€˜Saxons’ too
