The Oxfam gods were good to me today

Also love the tasteful Kollar quote they put here for some reason. Someone did their research!

They conclude:

“Every encouragement and aid should be given to loyal Slavic organizations and individuals in counteracting these influences.“

“In the interest of national security, the Federal Government cannot afford to overlook subversive influences at work among 10,000,000 of our Slavic-Americans concentrated in our basic industries.”

Just discovered this fascinating report from 1949 warning of the dangers of Pan-Slavist subversion in the US (publishing by House Committee on Un-American Activities).

“51 percent of the workers in the coal and steel industries are of Slavic extraction…”

Heading to the Eternal City for the third time in as many years in a couple weeks.

It’s been a whirlwind week so I forgot to even say, but a huge thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate the launch of Central Europe earlier this week 🙏

The view that every author dreams of!

Quite a fascinating passage from here interpreting Britain’s WWII mythos (Dunkirk, the Blitz) an expression of traditional Protestant providentialism. Implies it was not so much WWII itself that united postwar Britain but a particularly Protestant interpretation of its significance!

Learning from this that not only did the Welsh historically refer to the English simply as ‘Saxons’, but Scottish Highlanders also saw the English and Scots speaking Lowlaners and the English collectively as ‘Saxons’ too
