There also different levels of acceptable talismanic elections as well. Windows that are good for quick talismans prescribed for clients vs. linked talismans vs…well it goes on and on, using multiple elections for larger workings, it runs such a wide range. It depends what ur doing and the context…

And it’s also important to know that there are different forms of talismans that make use the elections in different ways

The way people in the west think magic squares are passive objects you just place upon some hodgepodge altar as a plain aesthetic and coorespondance ting as if there isn’t robust and multiple ways to activate it thru theurgy and contintually upkeep and increase its barakah and relationship to you.

This is why I think y’all are better off grabbing the source material and learning from that than wasting money on content that’s just ripping from and reimagining (read: misinterpreting and decontextualizing) that material.

Consumers will take a pretty, showy magic that requires no effort and does very little over an effective magic that requires work and looks “dirty” or “unsophisticated.” This is a social media business. You’re being sold aesthetics.

People take the Picatrix-style talismanic magic route because it’s popular, not necessarily because it’s effective or even well understood. There are other types of talismans and other types of magic out there, but they’re harder to sell because people are looking for an aesthetic, not a result.

And like I said in another post: these paths, and the materia used and made along these paths, are distinct in theory but rarely in practice especially as they get circulated and innovated across different cultures.

Regardless of the path chosen— i.e. image, letterism, natural, or otherwise— Astrology is used to supplement the magic by finding the appropriate times to conduct these activities.

To reiterate, picatrix stye image magic aren’t the only path to talismanry. The magic squares are a separate technology with a separate science to making and using them. They are absolutely more than added symbolism on a desk.

Been thinking about this a lot. Images are very specific. They invoke very specific outcomes. But people use them as catch-alls and direct analogues to squares, seales, and sigils. That’s not how magic works at all.

I also encourage against the tendency of using terms that describe the magical objects interchangeably.

This is especially important since different objects were made to be used by different people, i.e. the client and the mage.
