This recent paper by colleagues Szymon Czyลผewski and @jcsvenning.bsky.social from @econovoau.bsky.social calls for nothing less than a paradigm shift in the way we should view European forests๐ฒ๐ณ๐ฑ w ๐๐ซ๐ฎ as some of the main (missing) players.
Hopefully it will resonate!

@ecosystemengineer.bsky.social thanks for this insight. Really interesting. I have talked to a former exec at the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. They tell intriguing stories of how they topple the old plantation trees. Would be cool to do some combination of that and experiments like you suggest.

Using simple ecological rules*, we explore how the interplay between ecosystem engineering, seed size and light environment can explain temporal patterns of animal and seed sizes from the fossil record๐ณ๐๐๐ฑ

It feels double-relevant in times when the Arctic is hot but Arctic geopolitics is hotter, and the people at the centre of it all are not always treated as they should be๐ฌ๐ฑ

06.02.2025 04:38 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yeah, there is a lot of nuance missing from that narrative. We had a paper out recently: theconversation.com/in-the-arcti...
We should identify the best natural climate solutions for each context based on a holistic approach to the Earth system to avoid counterproductive initiatives.
Another testament to how important it is to have realistic expectations to how much climate mitigation trees can deliver on decadal timescales.

That is a very fair comment. There has been intensive writing on this topic in recent years - we reference most of the recent sources in our original Nature Geoscience paper: www.nature.com/articles/s41... (pm for e-copy)
05.01.2025 13:51 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Hehe, gotcha ๐ unsurprisingly also something we emphasise in the paper. However, it is also imperative that Net Zero means net C removals from the atmosphere, hence we need to make sure removal strategies, such as tree planting, do not have other undesired effects negating the primary purpose
