The imposter issue has been getting worse by the day. I hope the Bluesky team is pragmatic enough to look into a central verification solution.

This explains it pretty well I guess.

I said there was no hacking. I read the evidence and found it to be extremely lacking, and easily explained by less nefarious reasons.

We lost. We know why we lost (disinformation, messaging). Now we move forward with that knowledge and try to overcome.

Pretty aggressive response. Not a big fan of name-calling.

Wild claims without evidence. What's yours?

Jumping to conclusions without evidence undermines democracy, and I think we owe it to ourselves and others to base our views on facts rather than fears. Let's work towards solutions that strengthen the system, not spread doubts that can't be substantiated.

It's time to focus on ensuring transparency, accountability, and trust in the process. If there are legitimate concerns, the appropriate course is to gather evidence and engage through proper channels like audits, recounts, or court challenges.

There was no hacking. Everything is as bad as it looks. Now is not the time for wild conspiracy theories. That's what they do, not us.

Has there ever been a more hate-watchable movie series than The Conjuring? I think not.

Bad look. You would think we would be smarter about these types of things by now.

Harder than explaining to my mom that 'Bluesky' isnโ€™t the new weather app.

I've been sounding the alarm on this for a few days. Bluesky has a real issue when it comes to imposter accounts, and I honestly don't see a valid solution that doesn't involve a central vetting authority.

Only if Bogie came back as a ghost and got really into niche film trivia forums.

This is why we lose elections.

That's fair, and I've considered that too. I really do hope it works, but I think it's a longshot that needs a backup plan.

19.11.2024 15:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think you answered your own question. A central authority is needed. Most people aren't here because they are passionate about federated systems and specialized protocols. They're here because everywhere else is a hellscape.

What about the case where an impersonator gets a lookalike domain? If there are multiple Stephen Kings, one with stephenking.com and others with stephenking.co, or stevenking.com, etc, you've got a problem. Most users are not going to do a whois to check who owns the domain.

The vast majority of public figures are not going to go through the hassle of learning DNS so they can prove their identity to strangers. This is evidenced by that fact that I've seen very few do that so far.

19.11.2024 15:29 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I honestly don't see how Bluesky can succeed without some sort of verification system. The self-serve verification won't work.

The characters make the dumbest possible decisions at the worst possible times. Hey look, a previously undiscovered alien creature on a remote planet...let's pet it.
