When using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, don't just make text bigger and bolder to make it a heading. That will work for sighted users, but screen reader users will miss that and just hear it as normal paragraph text. Use actual heading styles, like level 1 through 6.

Accessibility awareness and training are good first steps, but they aren't the end. Teams need to create accessibility policies and strategies based on that training and newfound knowledge. Managers must empower people to enforce policies to make sure everyone does their part.

I fully agree. So many charts and graphs are so hard to read due to their complexity and the need to jump around. When I help subject matter experts write long descriptions, I always make sure they do it in a way that directly labels all data for each item.

So I work with the subject matter expert to rebuild the chart, and then add alt text (and long description if needed). If it wasn't for the accessibility review, it wouldn't be usable by anyone, sighted or non-sighted.

Interestingly, when I work on making documents accessible, I often find that the visuals (charts, graphs etc.) don't even make sense when viewed by a full-sighted individual.

How screen readers read special characters: an update | Eleven Ways

How a screen reader reads a special or unique character will depend on the character as well as the screen reader. There's been a lot of improvement over the last decade, but there are some characters aren't correctly read by certain screen readers.

Funny, I never really thought of myself as "in the field", but I guess I do perform a lot of accessibility work. I joined bluesky to find others in the field, and people who are interested, to learn more and share more. Seems to be working so far!

Thanks for sharing! I've been doing a bunch of accessibility conversions lately, so thought it might be worth sharing some of the common errors I've noticed.

Two tables demonstrating how to title a table, and how to not title a table. The first table shows the title placed in the top row of the table, which is not an accessible way of titling a table. The 2nd table shows the title placed as text, outside and above the table. This is much more accessible.

Accessibility tip: Don't add a row at the top of your table to give your table a name/title. The top row of a table should always be used for column headers only. Keep the title above and outside the table, or use options in the "table properties" (if available) to give it a title. #a11y

A graphic with two tables, demonstrating the way to properly (and improperly) make a table accessible. One that has a blank cell, which will not be read out by a screen reader. The other table has all the same data, except adds N/A instead of leaving the cell blank, indicating that this particular cell should contain data, but the table owner has not been able to get the data yet.

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities! I'm a bit of an accessibility geek, so I may try posting some tips on here on a regular basis for those who are interested. #a11y

Tables: Don't leave cells blank. Make sure there's something there, such as N/A, 0 (for quantities).

I find that many people think everything needs to be broken down into black and white only. Even when it's not possible. No room for grey areas, additional context, etc. See it lots in politics, where people can't even acknowledge if the "other side" has a good policy, idea, or success.

Oh no, are you impacted by this week's news? I'm so sorry. We are losing such amazing talent and the ability to put people where they are needed most. I wish you all the best in navigating these tricky times.

Score! Found this gem in Fiji this fall. We even had a family tasting/brushing session to compare tasting notes.

Very foamy. Divine eucalyptus flavor. 9/10.

He definitely is. I mean, he, out of the blue, sends me all these albums to check out (like the Cure, who neither of us had listened to before). He's 71 and still carrying the flag of rock like he's 17! I don't need Spotify recommendations, I've got a rock encyclopedia!

Thanks for adding me! And this is an awesome way for me to find some good people to follow, with me being new to this app and all. You're doing the good work!

My dad recommended this one to me, and I really liked And Nothing is Forever, and I Can Never Say Goodbye quite a lot. The whole album was great. My only complaint was that some of the intros were longer than I would prefer.

Also, funny enough, my dad also listens with Bluetooth hearing aids!

Fun! I haven't seen bare ground in over a month though, slightly jealous...

Awesome. Though it makes me a bit sick, thinking of how much hair-pulling-out I did through pretty much the entire game haha... Maybe I could have actually managed to parry in this version... Maybe.

Never thought too deep about it. But maybe that's why I loved Elden Ring. The rush of finally getting good enough to pass a boss was amazing. But when that got to be a bit tiresome, there was just so much to explore. Wander. Look. Take screenshots. Best of both worlds perhaps?

Yes, the technical side is definitely there, I guess time will tell if they actually invested the time to implement it!

I'll be curious to see... Accessibility is often an afterthought, sadly. Would be nice to have an app that can send you a notification when it's time to board, or automate it through text/sms.
