I disagree. We ought to apply those teachings regardless of the way the world is. To factor that into account leads to conservatism and reformism. The Gospel is not those things.

But there is something in the text itself which lends itself to be historicized. However if a claim is made (by a figure we deem to be inspired) and that claim is speaking about the Order of Things, as it were, then what now?

But I am not trying to insult anyone who does this. Perhaps in the past I would have been more skeptical/less charitable abou this issue, but I recognize it's a thorny issue. Just trying to parse it out.

I don't think it's a degradation, which is a strong word. I just don't know. I am saying that when it makes historical claims, we can historicize it. When scripture says: this is The Order of Things, it becomes a bit harder!
