Every person and organisation, with a long enough past, will have stuff they deeply regret in their past.

How errors and mistakes are addressed should be judged, not tar entire organisations for the actions of an individual until the end of time.

A) They didn't try to cover it up, they did the typical thing and trusted their comrade, who didn't deserve it.
B) They learned from their massive fuckup and like many due to #metoo, they changed their procedures to "trust victims" (and verify).
C) The leadership's changed, that was 20 years ago.

I'd expect a high number of them had traumatic childhoods, as it's so often cycles of trauma creating abusers who pass on their trauma and round and round it goes.
