My favourite quote from one of my mentors Dr. Norm Kenkel: "don't give reviewers sticks they can use to beat you with".

I've repeated that one at least a thousand times by now!

Wow that's super cool. We captured dozens of moose with a net gun from helicopter and never had any issues releasing them. We also did a one time spring calf count for all of the collared females which meant pushing them out of cover to count the babies--zero issues.

An American Badger is seen heading into its burrow on the grasslands.

Habitat loss in Canada’s grasslands has threatened many species.
That includes the American badger, which Fisher described as β€œone of the most important, central and iconic species that remains of the North American grassland ecosystem.”

The best option to avoid a moose confrontation is to remember you are ALWAYS in moose country and keeping aware. Have a quick scan of the area before proceeding outside.

If you encounter a moose close up DO NOT start taking photos or try to get closer. Remain calm and back away. Get to shelter.

Moose are generally calm and just ignore us, but..

Obvious signs of a pissed off moose:

-ears back
-head low
-hair on neck up
-smacking lips
-snorting or grunting
-stomping feet

or..there may be little to no sign before a moose charges.

I did an interview today about an aggressive moose in Saskatchewan that caused some significant concern. There is no place in this province that I would be surprised to see a moose at this point, including my neighborhood in Saskatoon. 1/3

Chart shows life expectancy (3-year rolling average) from the pre-pandemic year 2019 through 2024. The SK govt declared COVID over in Feb 2022. But the chart shows Saskatchewan’s worst year for life expectancy was actually the next year, 2023.
Saskatchewan started the pandemic with the 3rd lowest life expectancy among the provinces, ahead of Newfoundland & Manitoba, but by 2024 was second lowest, ahead only of Manitoba.

How are we in Saskatchewan doing with life expectancy through COVID? Pretty awful, actually.
New Statistics Canada report shows SK life expectancy is 2nd lowest of πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦β€™s provinces in 2024, down from 3rd lowest in last year before the pandemic.

Olympians are masking up with N95s because they know a covid infection can derail their chances of competing.

They know it could derail their careers.

They know it could disable them.

They’re practicing self care and community care.

Give them a gold medal in public health!
